About

About R.P. Hardie Leather Co.

Many, many years ago I was given a gift of a starter leathercraft kit that included everything a young mind would need to create every one of the projects that were included; there were 11 projects in the kits at that time. As I began the process of learning all about how leather was made, how to stamp and carve & tool the designs, how to stitch and lace, and how to apply coloring and finishes using the varied techniques, I found that the idea of creating beautiful works of art that you can use every day fascinated me and left me wanting to learn more and make more things. That was when my journey in this trade began but there were more things along the line that helped define the direction and style that would follow.

As I continued to learn more techniques and improve my skills I also started to dabble in other things that would eventually lead me to take an even deeper dive into what leather work could offer. I starting participating in Rodeo events and focused on Bareback, Saddle Bronc, and Bull riding as my events and with this came the need for equipment and repairs so I took on the challenge of learning saddle making as well as all of the skills and techniques that are required to create, make, and maintain the other leather gear items that Rodeo competition requires. Along with this I also found myself making belts, spur straps, and other leather accessories for my fellow competitors as well as spectators to some of our events which is when the first official business venture of my leather working career started and began to grow.

Over the years of working with leather I have made belts, wallets, purses, saddles, and so much more that are scattered around the globe and most of them are still in use today and still in their original condition, less a few years of wear from use of course. Leather is one material that cannot be matched by any other for strength, durability, wear, and versatility; there is nothing else like it and that is proven by the fact that it is the original material used by the human species for just about everything needed in our daily lives. From clothing, to transporting things, to securing things together, and so many more applications, leather is the first, and in most cases only, material that has been proven to meet these needs and do it for many years. There are still ancient leather pieces from the days of the Egyptians that are intact and as durable as they were the day they were made.

Every piece I make is made entirely by hand through the entire process; no machines or pre-fabricated components exist in my Studio/Workshop and that is how it has been for thousands of years before me with the Craftsmen of Olde. I still use many of the techniques and processes that have been around since man first started using the skin of animals to create things of necessity to make his life easier and I am sure that some of these techniques and processes will remain in use for Eon's to come as there is no artificial or mechanical replacement for them at this time or for the foreseeable future.

Everything I make is derived from the finest U.S. full-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide and includes the use of the finest and most widely used dyes/stains, finishes, hardware items, threads and laces to bring it all together. I have spent many years using many products and now only use those that are the best in the industry and meet the standards of quality and performance that allow me to produce the best product that money can buy. There are no "seconds" anywhere in my inventory and nothing less than the highest quality of craftsmanship, durability, performance, and functionality leave my Studio. If it isn't the best that it can be it goes to the scrap bin and I start over.

Sure, you can buy some similar items from your local stores or even find something online that might be close but none of them compare when it comes to the quality of materials and products that go into making what I make nor are there very many people who posses the skills, expertise, and experience that I do when it comes to working with leather and making fine leather items. The vast majority of the skills and techniques that I have learned in my over 40 years of working with leather are no only possessed by about 8% of the global leather working community and even less than that are actual professionals in this trade as business operators.

My desire to provide fine leather accessories to those who truly understand the qualities of value and craftsmanship is what drives me to keep this trade alive and to continue to learn new skills, techniques, and styles as I continue this journey. I do what I do for you, not me and I enjoy it ever so much.

The world of leather goods is vast and unique so anything is possible with leather.

Thank you for visiting my shop.

Shop policies

Welcome to the home of R. P. Hardie Leather Co., I am the High Desert Leathersmith of Northern Nevada.

My philosophy is quite simple: to provide everyday people with high-quality, hand-made durable leather goods that are intended for everyday use and can be used for years to come. Unlike the products that we currently purchase from the local discount stores, the products that I make do not fall apart within a few weeks or months, they last much, much longer. In fact, some items can last so long that they are actually passed from one generation to the next.

I proudly use materials from the USA to create my products and everything is entirely made by hand. From the cutting of parts, to the design work, stitching/lacing and finishing, it is all done by hand just like it has been done by Artisans for centuries.

You may cancel your order if you wish but this must be done in accordance with the Cancellation policy posted above, otherwise I'll start making it! Shipping
I strive to ensure that all orders are completed within the time frame noted on the item listing; all orders are worked on in the order in which they are received without exception.

All orders are shipped via USPS Priority Mail utilizing their Flat-Rate boxes and padded packaging to provide the maximum amount of protection for your leather goods. This method allows for the fastest transit times at the lowest rates with the most protection over any other USPS format or shipping carrier. During times of high shipping traffic (Holiday's) or extreme regional weather conditions the transit time may take longer due to carrier limitations and policies; these delays are the responsibility of the carrier and beyond my control or responsibility and all questions regarding such delays should be directed to the carrier.
Additional policies and FAQs
Due to the high costs of shipping to International destinations the decision to withdraw from sales outside the U.S. was necessary. There are many fine leather craftsman around the globe and you should support them and their businesses to the fullest.

Some listings within this shop may include the use of "props" to help portray how the item(s) may be used or to show-off some of the special features; these "props" are not included with any item as they are for display purposes only. (Silly to have to use such a disclaimer but you know there is a reason why.)

All orders are processed in the order in which they are received so there are no "RUSH" orders accepted. First come; first served.

I do not accept requests for wholesale, consignment, or custom order items that include licensed materials, logos, or imagery that is protected under a Trademark or Copyright, PERIOD, so please don't even ask as this is against the law here and abroad.

I stand behind the products I make and offer a Lifetime Guarantee that the craftsmanship put into every item is of the highest quality. I can guarantee that an item will be free from any defects in craftsmanship and will last far longer than any commercially produced product of comparable style and design as long as the item is used in the manner for which it is intended and is properly maintained and cared for based on the type of materials used. To assist with this, you will be provided care instructions with your order.

Being as leather is a natural material that is derived from the skin of an animal and the type of leather I use has not been cosmetically modified from its original form, it is common understanding that there may be slight blemishes or marks on the surface or that there may be slight color variations that do not appear until the finishing process. I make every effort to ensure that no major surface issues such as brands or large scars are present on the sections selected for your project in order to achieve the fine detail and clean appearance of the finished design. However, there will always be some form of blemish on the leather as this is an unavoidable event. Any blemishes or color variations by no means effect the integrity or durability of the leather and these blemishes or variations are not acceptable as justification for return or a claim of damage.

This shop reserves the right to refuse any order, at any time without further explanation or justification for such a decision and without any further recourse being afforded the person who's order was refused. This reservation also applies to all requests for return that are declined.
Privacy
I do not directly collect or have access to your payment information as this is processed by third-parties and handled through their security layers. The only personal information that I do collect is your name, address, and contact information and this information is used solely for the purpose of verifying that I am sending a completed order to the person who has ordered it and that it will be sent to the correct address; if issues arise I will use your contact information to notify you.

I do not share nor sell any of your information with other sellers or agencies and I do not use your information for marketing or sales pitches as I do not maintain a mailing list.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

I welcome custom and/or personalized orders and will work with you on providing you with what you are looking for as long as it does not violate the intellectual property rights of another person or company. If you would like to discuss a custom order please contact me through the Etsy Conversations process and we can get to work on your ideas.

Sizing details

In the event that specific sizing information is required on an item, this information will be detailed in the item's listing information and must be followed as outlined to ensure a proper fit is achieved. Failure to follow specified instructions will void any and all guarantees and rights to return the item(s).

Care instructions

Leather is very easy to maintain and care for and you will be provided with written information in your order that will address this topic. Please follow the provided information as detailed; failure to do so could result in potential item failure and will automatically negate any implied or written guarantee or promise and will also disqualify the item(s) for return/replacement consideration.

What type of leather is used?

I use only the finest and highest rated natural vegetable-tanned cowhide leathers, pigskins, and exotic skins that are each carefully selected for their proven results of durability and natural character. These materials may cost more but they do so for a reason; if you want something cheap, this isn't where you will find it.

Do you ship Internationally?

Sorry, but no, I do not. The cost of shipping an item outside the United States is so high that it just isn't cost effective for the consumer in today's marketplace. Couple that with the fact there are many fine craftsmen around the world right now it is only appropriate that you support your local/regional craftsmen so that their businesses can flourish as well.
