About

I'm an artist who loves history.

In the beginning I was hired by museums to make very detailed pen and ink drawings of historic buildings. That was enormously gratifying, because I got to see a lot of wonderful places, even behind the scenes, and meet great people. Some of the people I met were crafters, making delightful colorful items. Since I'd always liked turning my drawings into Christmas cards, I gave Christmas ornaments a try. I chose wood because I could find local people to cut it for me and because, in the beginning, the wood was free. I had to learn all about belt sanders, sealers, and acrylic paints. BUT it worked and was terrific fun. I've made thousands of ornaments over the last twenty years and still love painting them. The wood is no longer free, but there's a man in Richmond who cuts my buildings and people in Maine who do the turnings for my men. I have two people here in rural Virginia who help by painting the base coats or gluing the pieces together. I paint the final details. I'm good with details.
