Sure to be a a hit with the odd segment in my family. Print is clear and ornament is well executed. Black lace adds to the weird charm.

Finding inspiration from the past
So, where did the name "Rags & Old Iron" come from? I grew up in Pittsburgh, in a predominately German community that holds many happy childhood memories for me with it's Victorian homes and row houses that don't look like much on the outside, but inside are bright and cozy, and contain beautiful woodwork and elegant little details. My family has told stories about the Rag Man who would come into the neighborhood with his horse and cart and call out "Rags...old iron, rags...old iron." My Great-Uncle Clarence would rock and soothe the fussy babies by singing "Rags...old iron, rags...old iron". It has a lovely rhythm to it, don't you think? I had chosen the name, Rags & Old Iron, because it captures the romance and elegance of a long ago era, the creativity of turning something old into something new, and the warm and fuzzy feeling of my Pittsburgh home and the people I love.
I am a mixed media artist and primarily work in assemblage and paper collage. The materials that I use are items that I have picked and collected over the decades from flea markets, the lake, my Grandparents basement, antique stores, and other places. Hunting for treasures is an obsession. The new pieces that I create must have some antique or vintage element about them, or speak of the past in some way to satisfy me. I do work in an aesthetic that is macabre and unusual. A style I call "Eerie Elegant".
I have been an artist my entire life. I have won awards as a youth, and often participate in group art shows. I had studied art in college but like many women, I had to step away from doing what I am passionate about to focus on the important work of starting a family. In 2012, with the encouragement of a friend, I entered a small craft show, and created Rags & Old Iron. This was the catalyst for me and I have continued forward with my work ever since.
The production, creating, getting the idea to become something real for myself (and everyone) to enjoy is so satisfying. But meeting the customers and hearing their stories and their connection to my work is the part that I like the best. Many people find some spark from their own past in my work and I think that is so great. This is what I love to do and my art is very much a part of who I am.
