I was blessed to have the magic of Poppys work to be part of my wedding. I ordered the headdress and it completed my outfit. I will be ordering more of her magic as soon as i can. When my headdress arived, it was packaged with lavender to keep it safe in travel. It is breathtaking and will where it for more then just my wedding.

From a little girl's imagination to a designer and maker of Gypsy Rags and Alternative Clothing

Why Rags for Gypsies?

Why do I like Gypsy Clothing? As a little girl, and I am talking about under 5 years old, my dear grandmother used to dress me up in old net and curtain as a princess, gypsy or a bride. She would use bits of old bracelets and necklaces to make jewels to wear and I adored playing this wonderful game. I used to parade up and down the hall feeling so pretty and grown up.

Later on after she passed away I kept dressing up, I would raid my Mother’s or elder sister’s wardrobes for things to wear. This carried on and I distinctly remember one day my Mother buying me this wonderful brightly coloured Gypsy skirt and bolero. It came with a petticoat and gypsy blouse. I fell in love with it; I loved its colours and shape and wore it to the Maypole dance. I would dance around wearing this wonderfully colourful outfit feeling amazing.

Well the little girl grew up and still likes to dress like the gypsy princess, with my jewels and pretty clothes. I’ve learnt that the gypsy was not just imaginary, but part of me and the way I look at life. It is part of my soul. I have many different facets to my personality and gypsy, hippie are two of my most favourite ones. I love the thought of a gypsy girl dancing around a campfire, barefooted, being at one with nature. Barefoot in her rags and tatters I love the freedom she would have had, and can relate to that connection with the earth. Traditional Gypsies would make their clothes from bits of rags and make the most fantastic creations. I love Gypsy music and find a lot of classical music has that wonderful heart-rendering feel when the violin plays its part and you feel the depth of emotion it portrays. It gets me right in that spot where you want to dance and cry all at the same time.

I love Gypsy Caravans and one day, if ever rich enough, would dearly love to own one and use it as my workshop. I do however have a lovely workroom painted to my choice of colours with inspirational pictures and things I have made to give me that creative spark. I love Sarah Moon pictures, another blast from the past. I had some on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager and I recently bought a few prints for my work room wall. Lots of butterflies adorn another frame I have made and some lovely old prints from the Victorian period. I have a tambourine (well what do you expect?) and it has ribbons on it, just like my gypsy princess would have had.

I said I have a soul of a gypsy and my heart also is with mother earth. I grow lots plants in our garden and also have a greenhouse. We have our own veg and flowers and berries that I am now using to make natural dyes, which is traditional and my gypsy girl would have done this. So look out for some amazing colours soon.

Anyway back to making clothes, I find the Gypsy persona very inspirational and intense. When you think of some famous gypsies in the past like Esmeralda, a beautiful gypsy girl in such a tragic story is very dramatic. During the summer months, I tend to walk around barefoot as it is much more comfortable. I even go shopping in town or out and about and gardening wearing my long flowing tattered rags, as this is my normal day to day attire. Not your average girl and proud to be so!

I love pretty things (probably a bit of magpie there!) I admire theatrical and renaissance costume and have some in my wardrobe. I have in the past been a photo model and even met my husband whilst doing this for a book that he is writing. I was portraying a relative of his, who lived in the 18th Century and was sold as a white female slave (yes, there were hundreds and thousands of these poor souls!) in the Caribbean. This involved wearing dirty tattered period costume, which was fun. However, my everyday rags are a lot cleaner, but still ragged and tattered! I am my own person and what I wear expresses who I am.

I also love fabrics that have that wonderful feel when you touch them, like satin, velvet, taffeta or silk and feminine clothing that has that special something - The different effects layered delicate fabrics can transpose on another.

I love nature and enjoy walking our family dog; here I get the opportunity to see so much the world has to offer. Being in the country experiencing everyday changes of season, colour, wildlife and weather. They quite often are my palettes to work from. They give me ideas to create something different. Looking at the world in different light changes a scene, like an artist painting I collect in my head colours, textures, feelings that make me feel inspired to create the things I do. As I live this life and I create more lovely rags, I feel whole in who I am and what beautiful things I can give the world. I just hope they are as inspirational as nature’s own palette.

My name is Poppy. I am spiritual and in touch with nature, living as I do in the deepest rural England not a stone's throw from Stonehenge.

I really belong of another age and this reflects in what I wear and in what I do everyday. My designs are in touch with my inner self and what I wear and not simply for special occasions.

I am committed to reusing old fabrics and materials so that their purpose is regenerated. Reincarnation of all things is a strong belief of mine.

My aim is to design and produce clothes that are distinctive and have a "Wow Factor". They are not for the faint hearted or those that simply want to melt into the crowd!

Please let me know if there is anything special that you would like me to make on a custom basis, if you do not see anything available in my shop that grabs your fancy.

Please note that I am based in the United Kingdom but ship Worldwide. While international shipping is usually fast, there can be delays that I cannot be responsible for. All my prices are in UK Pounds (GBP).
