Love, love this soap. I've repurchased it 5-6 times maybe? The scent does remind me of a Hawaiian getaway.

About

RainTree Botanicals– where the art of creating luxurious, handmade cold process soap meets the art of color, fragrance and design.

As a soap maker in the Pacific Northwest I am inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds me. For instance, have you ever noticed how much prettier everything looks after it rains? In Seattle we get to enjoy that experience 10 months of the year. This abundance of "liquid sunshine" affords me plenty of time for soap making.

I began making cold process soap for my family and friends in 1997. RainTree Botanicals was born in 2009 when my youngest child was soon to be off to college. What began as a way to fill my newly-found spare time quickly became an obsession. Which, I suppose, is moderately obvious as no sane person would try to keep over 60 varieties of soap in stock.

My passion is to create appealing, innovative designs that begin with the finest ingredients and finish with a product that delights the senses with luxurious lather, fragrance and color. Each bar is personally handcrafted by me in small batches, using only quality, environmentally sustainable ingredients with attention to detail in every step. Each formula was created after hours of researching the perfect blends of fats, oils and butters to give your skin the pampering it deserves. Although my soaps are primarily cold process I have developed unique ways to incorporate vivid color and fragrance using glycerin soap as an accent in some designs.

I love playing with color and design and incorporating these passions into my other hobbies of gardening and sewing. My home is Asian-inspired and I'm always scouting Etsy for unique items to enhance my home and garden including metalwork, woodwork and beautiful Japanese fabrics. And, of course, things that I can use for soap making!

Please contact me if you have any questions or special requests. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, thank you for visiting my shop! My passion is creating colorful, fun soap. I love to try out fragrance and color combinations and to see if my new inspiration will work. However, at RainTree Botanicals, soap is made from the bottom up. Meaning that the soap formula and the the choice of ingredients, combined with careful production, are the foundation of a truly great bathtime experience. Because, when you come down to it, you are really buying handmade soap for it's healthy ingredients, absence of chemicals, and abundant, natural lather. That's why I make all of the soap myself using 15 different recipes crafted to give you the ultimate handmade soap experience. That being said, on with the fun stuff like the fragrance, color and design!

RainTree products are cruelty-free (although I do splash myself with a couple of drops of lye now and then). I use the editorial ''we" in my soap descriptions but rest assured that I personally make every bar of soap by myself. And, as you can see by the length of my shop policies, I'm obsessed with customer service and all things soap.

Custom orders require a 50% deposit and at least 6-8 weeks lead time as the soap needs time to cure after it is made.

FAQs for soap geeks (and other curious people)
1. Does RainTree use essential oils (EO) or fragrance oils (FO)? What is the difference?

Some RainTree soaps are made with essential oils. EOs are extracted from plant parts. Examples include leaves (peppermint), bark (sandalwood), resin/sap (frankincense), flowers (rose) and fruit peel (citrus). All essential oils are listed in the ingredients.
Most RainTree products are made with fragrance oils which are synthetic "copies" of natural scents. (These are listed as "fragrance" in the ingredients.) There is no Mango EO or "Essence of Ocean" EO, for instance. Sometimes FOs are used even though an EO is available. There are several reasons for this: (a) the EO comes from a plant that is endangered, (b) the EO is likely to irritate your skin, and/or (c) the EO is very expensive and it would be wasteful to use it in soap. Sometimes a combination of FOs and EOs are used.

2. Why does RainTree caution pregnant women, pets and those with medical conditions about the use of products containing essential oils?

Because you can never be too careful.

3. Why did you put *that* in the soap and what the heck is it?

•Palm oil: RainTree uses palm oil from suppliers who are members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) who are working together to harvest palm oil in an environmentally sustainable way to reduce destruction of the rainforests and to save orangutan habitat.
•Wild silk (Tussah silk): Wild silk moths leave behind their cocoons which can be harvested after the moths have emerged (unlike what happens in the silk fabric industry). The silk fibers are dissolved into the soap to add "silkiness" to the lather.
•Rosemary oleoresin: We use this natural antioxidant to give the soap a longer shelf-life. It helps to keep the soap-making oils from oxidizing (spoiling).
•Candelilla wax: This is a plant-based wax (it comes from a species of cactus) used to add hardness to the soap. It's a vegan alternative to beeswax and is used in lots of B&B products, such as lip balm.
•Salt: We add this to help harden the soap so that it can be cut sooner.
•Sugar/honey: RainTree adds a small amount of sugar to boost the lather so that less coconut oil can be used. (Coconut oil makes lots great lather, but can be drying to the skin when too much is added to the soap.)
•Yikes! All of those scary-looking, chemical-sounding colors: RainTree soap is classed as a cosmetic so FDA-approved colorants must be used in our soap. Despite the unnatural-sounding names, these colorants are things like micas and pigments that are commonly used in eyeshadow, for example. Believe it or not, most "natural" colorants (like spices and herbs) are not on the approved list– go figure!
•Sodium hydroxide: You can't make soap without using lye. Period. There are many ways of skirting around the issue when listing the ingredients, but, trust me, if it has soap in it now there was lye in it before. Notice that I said that lye *was* in it; it's not there any more. The lye, or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) combined with the fatty acids (from the oils, fats and butters) in a chemical reaction that made an alkali salt (the soap!) and glycerin. This process is called "saponification." (Good cocktail party conversation stuff here!.... or maybe not.) So, soap is an actual chemical thing, not just a word to call those bars that we wash ourselves with (more on that later). Oh, and remember that glycerin that the saponification produced? That gets left in the soap bars, and glycerin is good for your skin (making it soft and smooth and keeping it from drying out by holding in the water). And, not only is there no lye in the soap anymore, extra oil has been added to help moisturize and nourish your skin.

By the way, those "bars" made by large manufacturers that you buy at the store that you think are soap– mostly detergent. Read the ingredients sometime: sodium palmate (soap made from palm oil), sodium tallowate (soap made from rendered animal fat), everything else– not soap. Also notice that it doesn't say "soap" on the label. Legally it can't because there isn't enough soap in it. Hence the terms "moisturizing bar" or "deodorant bar." And you won't find glycerin in there either (it has been removed) or extra fats. What you will find are lots of chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) because the "not soap" is synthetic detergent and it doesn't make lather without the SLS "sudsing agent."

RainTree soap is the *real* moisturizing bar. Full of great oils, fats and butters to nourish your skin and glycerin to keep your skin moisturized.
