About

One of the greatest feelings in my life is seeing the look on someones face when they first see an item I've made just for them.

I recall the very first name belt I ever made professionally. What a disaster! In 1973
I rented a very small shop space in the downtown area of a small area in North Portland, Oregon, called St. Johns. That little shop was a Watch and Jewelry repair shop for years. I think the old guy that ran it passed away. Any way, somehow I ended up renting for $50 a month.

I thought I knew how to do leather work, I mean gosh I'd made a couple of belts and a wallet and some other small items at camp and little bit at home when I was younger.

Back to the first Name Belt........it was for a very nice lady named Paula. She came into the shop, I had maybe 8 to 10 belts hanging on one wall and a purse or two hanging around, a couple of holsters and knife sheaths not much in form of inventory. Paula and I got talking, she decided she wanted a belt with roses on it, (after all Portland is known as The City of Roses,) with her name on the back. I took her waist measurement, and a deposit and told her it would be ready in a couple of days. I think I charged her 10 bucks or something like that. A couple of days later she came in, I showed her the finished belt, and she LOVED it. She paid the balance and left the store with a big smile on her face, and I felt like I had won the big one, it felt so good to make someone that happy. I had found my calling.

Next day she came back in, with the belt in her hand and NOT so big a smile on her face. UH OH whats up? The day before when she paid for it she left without trying the belt on, well when she did put it on, the name was over on her right hip, not centered in the back as it should have been. Needless to say my super hero status in my own head went to dumb ass faster than a speeding bullet....but being the very NICE lady she was, she was extremely gracious, she asked what I could do about it, well I had to remake the belt......but lesson learned.

Now to be honest, I learned most of the basics in leather work from books by Al Stohlman sold by Tandy Leather. Al was a masterful leather carver and one good artist, I've got the leather work down almost to his level but I'm just not the artist like him.......but I keep striving......maybe someday.

I found that one can learn the basics from books, but some things in life must be done hands on.......and I've been hands on with leather for 40 years, and yes I like to think I have learned a few things.....but to this day I still get that same rush when I see someones eyes as they see a custom piece I've done for them or when I read a review they've left on my ETSY store......

Thank you,....... to each and every customer I've ever had, for giving my life meaning and satisfaction.

Doing what you love isn't called work, it's a pleasure. There's something about creating a product and other people like it enough to actually pay you money for it How can that be called WORK, I feel so blessed that I've been able to do this in life

Frequently asked questions

Sizing details

My belt doesn't fit. What can I do about it?

I consider a belt sized correctly if it's within 3/4" of the stated size from the rollover at the buckle end to the center hole on the belt.

Please,Please, Please read the SIZING information listed with each belt and in the photo # 5 on most belts. If you give me the wrong size, I will remake the belt for 1/2 price...IF....you return the original belt, you pay postage each way.

I have done everything possible to make it clear how to measure and or buy the correct size belt...I strongly suggest you read the description text of each belt and look at photo #5, short version is..measure your waist or the person's waist and give us that # or find out the pant size and tell me that figure... :-) JM
