Sister Duo repurposing vintage military bags for your shoulder, hip and bike!
Two of our dear friends, Mychele Wooley-Fly and Ben Pitts started the Reclamation Dept Etsy shop. Casey was an intern for them, helping with tedious production tasks and manning the booth at local craft fairs. Ben built a gorgeous vending cart from a vintage bicycle with a box train attached to the back made from antique wood salvaged from the old Long Beach Pike. When the two of them decided to travel the world and pursue different creative ventures they sold us the vending cart and handed over the reigns. In the beginning, we followed closely in their creative footsteps but have since found our own direction, focusing mainly on making bicycle compatible shoulder and hip bags. Long Beach has a very vibrant cycling scene and a strong entrepreneurial spirit so we are always finding inspiration within our community.
There are so many things we love about this venture! We are sisters, best friends and soul mates in business so working together is an absolute joy. It is also really fascinating working with antique military gear. We are constantly researching the items we work with, from their country of origin, to their military use and what was happening in that area at that time in history. We are both history buffs so it is like total mind candy for us. In addition, we feel really good about the ecological implications of using salvaged materials and promoting bicycle commuting.
Our goal is to make this a full time job for both of us. We are learning how to run a small business as we go and we are constantly striving to improve our products and systems. Taking on this project has been truly challenging! We are a two woman show with a steady stream of mounting tasks, from the craft shows to production, admin, customer service etc. We've both been working our butts off in high volume restaurants for years and we can honestly say that Reclamation Dept has us working harder than we ever have before, but we've also never been happier! Like Confucius said, "choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." Being in our workshop together feels like creative play time and we are so grateful that we are able to share what we love doing with the world.
