A hobby now turned into a business!
I am a lampworker, sometimes called flameworker, and I work primarily with rods of glass which I melt and reform in the flame of a propane torch to create usually one of a kind pieces of jewellery using beads and pieces of glass art that I have made, or freeformed sculptural pieces, as well as art marbles mainly from borosilicate glass. So most of my creations are truely Handmade from start to finish.
I started Lampworking when, after I retired from the communications industry, I found I needed a hobby to occupy my time! I discovered the addiction that is lampworking at the annual meeting of lampworkers at the Flame Off here in UK. I was shown how to make a basic bead, and after 3 hours of "playing" on various torches, I ended up buying a starter kit and the rest is history!
I found I was making beads and other jewellery items for my wife. but needed an outlet for the surplus. So Red Dragon Lampwork was formed as a means to finance my hobby and turn it into a small business.
Nowadays I have moved on from the beads and jewellery (although I still do some) and I am now concentrating on glass sculpture, and primarily on soft glass insects and bugs!!
The glass I use for my creations comes mostly from Murano near Venice, but I also use glass from Germany, the Czech Republic, China and America. For the marbles I use Borosilicate glass, which comes from the USA.
You can see some of my creations by going to my web site at www.reddragonlampwork.co.uk and looking through my gallery! or, to see them in the flesh, so to speak, come to one of the fairs I will be attending, (check out my locations in the events page of my website)You could visit my facebook page as well at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Red-Dragon-Lampwork/118116941629764.
