About

Retro photographs in a digital world

Like many photographers, I started off in the black-and-white darkroom. When I decided to experiment with color, I made my first pilgrimage to Las Vegas. One of my first photos – and still a favorite – was an image I took inside a casino. The background was a rich red and the photo focused on a bank of nickel slot machines. I called that photo “Red Nickel,” and eventually used that name for my photography business.

The inspiration for the letter and number magnets came from a casual encounter at an art fair. Chatting with a customer about my photos from the Las Vegas Neon Boneyard sparked an idea, and my neon alphabet magnets were born. I hit the streets the next day, taking photos of neon signs in Boston and beyond, trying to complete the alphabet in time for my next show.

I make the magnets myself, from start to finish. I select just the right details from my photographs -- whether a neon letter or a vintage clock face -- and translate them into magnet-size images. I print them out, cut them into 2.25-inch circles, and use a button press to create the magnets, one at a time.

The photographs in my Etsy shop are a completely new body of work, again based on my love of city lights. For years I used a toy film camera called a Holga to take photos of buses, trains, bridges, and – yes – neon lights. The camera’s many imperfections allowed me to create photos with a vintage look. In this new series, I challenged myself to recreate the feeling of retro film photographs in a digital world.

I'm a photographer who likes buses, trains, palm trees, and neon. My camera of choice is a Holga but I'm learning to love my digital point-and-shoot.
