About

Printed by hand, Inspired by tradition

I love music, but play no instruments, so when everyone else had a rock band in college, I would make them all tshirts and posters in the print shop at school late, and set up a booth selling them at the shows.
I moved to Baltimore with my husband in 2004, and with the cash I'd saved from making band merch, I bought a screenprinting press on Ebay and set it up in a backyard shed, which had no heat. I continued doing commission printed work late at night while working a 9-5 job as an office manager - a job I despised in every way. I looked forward to bundling up and going out in the yard to make things when I got home. The first year, I got frostbite printing tshirts at 2am in January, but later that month, Red Prairie Press was a registered and licensed business in Baltimore and I was making my own designs in addition to printing for others. I was so proud and happy, and finally got to quit my job.
I did my first craft fair in the summer of 2006, and fell in love with the handmade community. My husband Phil joined the business from the beginning, designing graphics for baby onesies and committing countless weekends off from teaching to traveling the country selling at street fairs and art festivals at my side.
Red Prairie Press is now 10 years old, and now run from a cozy studio in a former sail-cloth factory, in the Woodberry neighborhood of Baltimore. We are committed to environmentally friendly practices including water based inks, some organic fabrics, and recycled/eco-friendly shipping supplies.
My designs are inspired by traditional folk art, Scandinavian design and objects from nature. I love pattern and line and shape and color and of course, comfortable, wearable, well made clothes.

Thanks for visiting, and showing interest in handmade products. We are so happy to do what we love and share it with you.

As a painter, I always wished that more than one person could own my work at a time and more people could afford it. I started Red Prairie Press as a way to make more utilitarian products without compromising my folk art/nature inspired aesthetic.
