Religious Icon's hope is to bring quality religious art to the Faithful

Nic: California born; the fourth of eight children. His father studied philosophy and his mother studied art, both in Detroit Michigan. Nic began studying art from a young age from his mother as well as private lessons. He won artistic awards throughout his school years while studying drawing, painting, pottery and architecture. He received his B.A. in philosophy at the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio and studied engineering for architecture. He pursued his Masters in Sacred Scripture at the Institute of Religious Studies in New York while also going to the New York Academy of Arts. Traveling abroad in Europe as well as Central America studying the arts, he incorporated these cultures into his paintings and sculptures. Through prayer and guidance, he felt that God was calling him to do artwork in an ancient yet renewed sense. In the spirit of Saint Francis to "Rebuild my Church," he started creating Icons not in the strictly traditional sense, but as a renewal of the old into the modern. He has currently been attending a Russian Iconology school in SOHO Manhattan, Prosopon School of Iconology.

Icons: The Icons are painted in prayer and fasting in a style whith the feel of the ancient icons. Often the layout is recognizable, tradition as an inspiration or model of beauty. In an age where a print or copy can be so easily produced of a master, it is a challenge- yet an inspiration to bring the ancient into the new. Yet a print is not the same as having an original living breathing piece of artwork,

Materials: The Icons are hand painted in the traditional method on bass wood panels which are coated in natural hide glue and a linen cloth mesh, twelve layers of traditional gesso made of chalk from Champagne and marble dust from Rome are mixed with hide glue and applied to a thickness of less than one sixteenth of an inch. The gesso is wet and dry sanded to a perfectly smooth finish. Once that cures they are painted in egg tempera hand mixed of egg yolks, wine and natural pigments. There is a layer of clay bole, and then 24 karat gold leaf applied as the halo. The icon is sealed with varnish of linseed oil to protect the leaf and painting.

Crucifixes: The crucifixes are hand carved from basswood and finished with natural oils to bring out the beauty of the grain. Each one is unique and original, developed in prayer as it is carved.
