I love my new camera lamp!! Definitely a show stopper and how creative of Milan Bender to build this robot lamp in the way he did. It fits right in with the retro/industrial style of my home decor and I will keep great care of it for years to come. Keep up the great work RetroBender! ^.^

i am extremely pleased with my purchase. The sellar shipped the lamp quickly with obvious extra care in the packing. The lamp was just as it was pictured allowing it to fit in my husbands office perfectly. I would highly recommend this sellar and products for a unique gift with high customer satisfaction.

1. How did you get into your current line of creation? What piqued your interest in this particular type
of work?

I've been a photographer for over 16 years now and I'm just as obsessed with collecting cameras & taking photos as ever. At the peak of my camera collection I had amassed about 100 cameras of all makes and models, this was back in 2005 when digital was really starting to gain traction and film cameras had just begun their decline in mainstream use. I knew I needed to preserve the history of this wonderful analog light recording device. My bright idea was to install a bulb into the lens making these cameras functional relics of a time now past. The irony is the camera which used to receive and record light, now emits light back so new memories can be made and recorded. Thus the cycle of progression continues.

2. What is your process like? How does the magic happen?

I choose many different cameras for many reasons; sometimes it's the history and story behind the camera, other times it's simply the beautiful design and engineering, or the right size for a new lamp concept. Then I find a functional way to create a base that matches both the genre and size of the particular camera. Only after all these factors align do you get a genuine Camera Lamp.

3. What makes your process unique or interesting?

I am a traditionally trained darkroom photographer. I don't just remember film, it was all that there was before digital photography. Truly digital photography has forever changed the landscape of the photo world, and deemed film a specialty item and only available in the most common sizes. This has reduced many once high tech light recording devices into pretty little boxes. My Camera Lamps are an ode to the simplicity and magic of the film age now mostly gone by.

4. What sets your finished product apart in terms of how it is created?

I am a perfectionist, neat freak, & purist. All of these qualities show throughout my creations. My grandmother Bee Bee Davis was a successful lamp maker and interior designer who sold lamps to stars such as Ozzy Osbourne. I guess you could say it's a family trade now.

5. How would you describe your creations to someone in one short sentence or phrase?

Functional Art / Up-cycling

6. What is the most unique/weird/awesome feedback or compliment you’ve received about your
creations?

One customer said " This is my new prize possession. It's adorable and very well crafted. My friend that's an electrician was super impressed. Thanks!"

Wanelo.com featured my "Owlberto The Wise" robot camera lamp With the Quote "PIPE DREAM, but what an amazing creation!" This tickled me to think I made someone else's dream lamp :)

7. What’s something quirky that no one would know about your goods just by looking at them?

Many times the parts I upcycle blend so well in the finished product that it's hard to imagine what they were before. A perfect example is the tripod legs on my Kodak Holiday camera lamp, I use vintage wood fondue forks attached to a circle cut piece of wood to create the lamp base.
