About

Vintage storybook collage. Speculative cultural commentary. Feminist. Geeky. One of a kind.

Molly Keenan has been making collages since childhood, when her mother first introduced her to the technique. Collage has been a near-constant companion throughout her professional life as a high school social studies teacher. In 2007, she brought a few collages to the art show at WisCon, a feminist science fiction convention. Japanese scholar and author Takayuki Tatsumi saw the collages and loved Molly’s work. He commissioned her to design the cover for his next book (Anti-Intellectualism in American Literature, published in fall 2007 by Nan-Un’do Publishing, Tokyo, Japan). Success at the WisCon art show, along with the book cover commission, inspired Molly and her partner Aaron to turn what had mostly been personal ‘art therapy’ into a small business.

Molly and Aaron founded RetroFutures Designs in 2009, while Molly continued to create collages that explore themes of feminism, science, fiction, popular culture, and the natural world. Like the crow in her collage “Diamond Necklace,” Molly is constantly on the lookout for shiny, unusual bits and oddments, which she collects in the RetroFutures studio. She uses found text and images, illustration, paint, and a variety of sharp tools to create works that juxtapose the vintage and futuristic, innocent and jaded, serene and haunting.
