stripes of colour that challenge the eye
"When colour challenges the safe, enclosing geometrical properties of the pictorial surface, as it is meant to, it does so with a slowness and delicacy that are disarming and a beauty that is exhilarating' *
*Mark Strand, poet, commenting on the work of Josef Albers.

I'm a stripe painter.
My work respectfully follows in a grand tradition of stripe painters, Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Barnett Newman, Bridget Riley and Sean Scully amongst many.
The colour I use is derived from natural resources, extracted from my photographs of New Zealand landscape and subsequently matched and painted in acrylic on canvas. The result is a unique palette; the colour reverberates with incandescence and luminosity and leaps from the surface structure, refusing to be static.
Using a stripe motif as a vehicle for painted colour, my work focuses on the use of colour equivalence and contrast, saturation, harmony and dissonance in order to evoke a sense of reverberation as colour encounters colour.
The slowness of the optical qualities, achieved through broad colour bands with blended edges, create quiet after-images that the viewer can savour, allowing slow pleasure in the encounter with colour.
Many years of work in the design and print industry have left me with a respectful knowledge of the workings and mechanics of colour and total intrigue with the vast colour exploration yet to be done – a great unknown.
Previous to 2007, much of my work was digital and output on paper and vinyl. Mid 2007 I began a series of stripe paintings and the continuing work is challenging and absorbing.
In 2008 I completed a Master of Fine Arts with RMIT University of Melbourne.
My current body of paintings explores the phenomenology of paint, surface and structure by using striped colour in intentional format, juxtaposition and sequence.
