Karen with RisingStarArt was so thoughtful and great to work with. She ensured our package came quickly and packaged appropriately (it is a panting and therefor could have been damaged). In addition to being wonderful, she was feeling the Christmas spirit and added a canvas to the package for free! My gift for my bridal shower is now even better! Thank you!

Outta My Head

I am a primarily self taught folk artist. I started painting professionally over 20 years ago with some black and white paintings that I did from snapshots of my family. I didn't know how to mix color and I was young and poor so black and white oil paint was my medium of choice. I have always had an interest in painting people and been fascinated by the ability of both photography and painitng to capture moments in time. I almost always paint my people from photos and while I might stay mostly true to the photo, my feeling and awkwardness as a folk artist provides the seperation between photo and painting.

Through trial and error, I eventually learned to use color in some landscapes and then moved on to painting from memory, dreams and visions. This work moved me into the realm of Outsider Artist and I was exhibited at the Outsider Art Festival in NYC and at the Atlanta Folk festival. I am included in the book "Self Taught, Outsider and Folk Artists" by Betty Carol Sellen.

One day I was at a family function with my husband and I took a picture of his dad and a couple of other old people on the couch which I thought was a really funny picture so I painted it. That was the beginning of my "People on the Couch" series which I do from candid snapshots of people on their couches. I really enjoy doing these as I love capturing people being who they really are.

I decided to paint a cow one day while I was pregnant. (Infer what you like :0) I wasn't using a photo for reference and was going completely from memory. Being self taught and having no experience with animals, the cow came out with human looking eyes that confront the viewer in a very angry way, thus earning th title "Mad Cow". This became the first in a long line of over 100 paintings of cows that I have done to date. After around the 4th cow painting in which I was going for a realism, I decided to have some fun and paint a few cows of different colors in unusual situations which quickly became popular among my collectors.

These whimsical paintings spring from a childlike place inside of me, completely "outta my head" or imagination, where my cows do magical things like fly and traverse the Land of Pez and guard the city as angel cows.

I am also inspired by my family, particularly my daughter, as well as my 3 cats. My subject matter grows as I move through life and different experiences and I often use paint to tell the story of my inner world.

I also took up pottery 2 years ago and have another shop on etsy- http://www.etsy.com/shop/risingstarpottery1. Please drop by and see my unique pottery pieces.
