About

Contemporary wood artwork designed in house using timeless materials.

Roaming Roots is about providing eccentric wood wares for a focal point on your wall, or for a space that needs something special and unique to enliven it.

Roaming Roots is a collaboration between two people who desired a different kind of life than what they were currently living. We came to the realization that our current occupations were not allowing us the ability to express ourselves or live our truth. We wanted the freedom to travel, and find our passion from creating something meaningful and tangible. What we've found by starting Roaming Roots is far more than a home based handcrafted woodworking business. We've been able to see our goals come to fruition, while connecting with people across the globe through our artwork. From working with clients on custom projects, we've been inspired and awed to see their ideas come to life in our shop.

We didn't realize how far our original idea of Roaming Roots would go when we started down this path. We didn't start out with a full-time business in mind. Fortunately, as a friend once said, if you do what you love, opportunities will always present themselves. We have been overjoyed to find this to be the truth. The more that our roots spread, the more abundant our creative energies become. The most exciting part is we have yet to see where this journey will take us next!

Our Process
Our process begins at a small, local sawmill, where we are able to hand select the timbers and species of wood we need. Carefully choosing the exact wood we will be using allows us to have cohesiveness in our style and the outcome of each design. Currently we are incorporating black walnut and white oak into our work. After several months of drying out the wood outside our shop, it is ready to be cut down into strips and coated with mineral oil to bring out the natural luster of the grain. After drying and reapplying, we are ready to sand down each strip to create a smooth sheen. Each strip is cut down to a specific puzzle piece, of which we will fit together into a new design. After the pieces are all fit snugly together, and stain or paint is applied to accent the design, we are able to apply adhesive to a thick piece of birch plywood backing, and methodically layout the design in its permanent setting. After allowing time for each piece to cure, we trim off the edges to allow for a snug frame. Each frame is carefully hand cut to specific size, and set in place around the border of the design. From this point, we apply a heavy layer of lacquer sealant, wait, sand, apply another layer, and wait some more! Eventually, when the piece has fully cured, and become complete, we equip each with gallery style d-ring and wire hanging equipment for ease of installation, burn our brand into the back corner, and sign each piece with love. After wrapping it in excessive layers of bubble wrap and cardboard, it is ready to start its journey to your home!

A home is an ever-evolving collection of your life experience. Surround yourself with items that tell your story!

My passion for creating and designing using the medium of wood was sparked at a young age after helping my father in his woodshop, as had been the tradition for seven generations of carpenters and woodworkers in my family. Thanks for stopping in!

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by our quaint shop. We started this shindig after discovering our mutual exuberance for crafting raw, timeless materials into one of a kind artworks. Haven't looked back since!

Sizing details

All pieces can be customized in terms of size.

The price will usually adjust according to the square footage of the piece requested.

If you're having trouble deciding on the size, I would recommend cutting out desired size from a piece of cardboard, and holding it up to the space you've envisioned the piece being displayed.

See FAQ on "Scale of reference" below for more information.

Scale of reference

XS (24" x 12"): A cat would cover this almost perfectly. This would be a great size for a gallery wall addition, or a small wall space in a hallway.

S (30" x 18"): About the same size as an average stove top. This size is big enough to make a statement, but it can fit nearly any blank wall space.

M (36" x 24"): Fits a mantle perfectly, but could easily be placed over a loveseat, or chair as well.

L (48" x 24"): This piece would make a perfect statement piece above an overstuffed chair, a loveseat, or in an office.

XL (60" x 30"): Similar in size to a full bed headboard. his would work beautifully as a statement piece in a dining room, or above a sectional sofa.

XXL (72" x 30"): Similar in size to the width of a California king bed.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Each piece is carefully wrapped in multiple levels of bubble wrap, and carefully packed in a custom heavy duty cardboard box.
