About the Artist

I am a graphic designer by trade and an artist at heart. Born in Greenville, Michigan, my family fostered my interest in art at a very young age. Eventually I studied art at Central Michigan University, then received my Commercial Art & Design degree from Indiana Vocational Technical College, South Bend, Indiana. I worked as an art director for an ad agency, then as a newspaper staff artist before starting my own graphic design business in 1987.

When I took my first watercolor class, I became intrigued with the way watercolor paint interacted with the paper, the timing of applying paint with water and the challenge of controlling the medium to get different effects. I like learning new techniques of applying the paint and especially creating textures using tools other than a paintbrush. I enjoy seeing the results of adding other mediums on a painting such as ink, gouche, markers and pastel. These combinations of detail and abstract keeps watercolor fun for me.

When I paint I attempt to capture the light and color of something common, natural or unexpected. I appreciate the beauty of a simple moment or expression and the play of light on the subject. My graphic design background has influenced my painting style to have an illustrative component with more emphasis on realism. I admire the work of several artists including N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, Douglas Chun, Kris Parins, Ian Ramsay, Cindy Baron and especially Terry Armstrong with whom I’ve taken many workshops.

I photograph subjects that have particular interest to me and enjoy the process of creating a composition. I like the level of planning that watercolor requires although some decisions happen while the paint is flowing! I can decide to paint very loose or tighten up the subject matter depending on my frame of mind and how I want individual elements to interact with one another. Once decisions are made, the fun can begin. Ultimately, I hope the viewer will enjoy my attempt at capturing the emotion and expression of a subject and that it might remind them to observe these simple moments in their own lives.
