More About Rock Dove Rings

I started Rock Dove Rings because I was sick of wearing mass-produced jewelry that looked like it was made in a factory. When I discovered electroforming, I was hooked.

Electroforming is a metal forming process which uses an electrolyic bath and a low current of electricity to deposit metals onto a conductive surface. Molecule by molecule, we slowly form a copper ring setting around a natural rock or mineral that has been secured to a hand-hammed ring band. Each piece takes 10 to 48 hours to form ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same.

Shop members

  • Carolyn

    Owner, Creator

Carolyn has been making jewelry for her friends for many years, but never landed on a process she loved until she tried electroforming. With a lot of help from Mickey (& science), she started making exactly the kind of jewelry she wanted to wear.

  • Mickey

    Owner, Creator

Mickey is 1/2 of Rock Dove Rings, but tends to be the silent partner. He taught himself how to electroform the old fashioned way (internet). Mickey is from Madison, WI and Louisville, KY and is also an animator, illustrator, and comedy writer.

  • Trixie

    Guard Dog, Curator

Trixie Doodles Baccaro Dwyer is a six-year-old Chihuahua, Min Pin mix whose favorite activities include, eating, snacking, making out, playing fetch by herself, sleeping under the sheets like a human, and going for long walks around the park.

  • Brutus

    Guard Dog, Customer Service

Brutus Bearcub Baccaro Dwyer is a six-year-old mutt who has been described as “a very sensitive boy.” He prefers quiet time with family to the company of other humans, dogs, or squirrels. Brutus enjoys listening to classical music in his closet/den.

Thank you for finding us! Rock Dove is currently a small team consisting of me, Carolyn Baccaro, and my husband Mickey Dwyer. Founded in Brooklyn—home of the Rock Dove, aka pigeon— our studio is now located just north of the city in Beacon, New York. My love affair with copper and rocks began when I learned that copper was the first metal to be used in jewelry making. One of the few elements to occur in nature in its pure, metallic form, our ancestors have adorned themselves in copper since at least 8,700 B.C. I love using this ancient metal to craft unique jewelry using a modern method.

Care instructions

Much like silver, copper tarnishes. That's why we professionally seal our rings and pendants with an environmentally friendly copper sealant to delay the metal's natural oxidation process. When the wax eventually wears off (which won't happen for a while) scrubbing your ring with a brillo pad and vinegar will brighten it up again. If you have an antique finish, you can contact me for advice on how to darken it again. If you are using your ring for therapeutic reasons, you can request unsealed copper for maximum absorbency.

Will it turn your finger green? No. Not until the sealant dissolves. If you're one of those lucky people who has a copper sensitivity you can reseal the inner band with clear nail polish every 6 to 12 months.
