About RubyPaws
The Perfect Collar for the Perfect Dog
My husband and I walked into Tandy Leather one day and bought a leather kit. After letting it sit around for several months, we finally oped the kit, messed around with it a bit and viola!
I have always loved dogs for as long as I can remember, and have always been the artsy type. I have always owned, loved, trained, worked with dogs, pretty much anything having to do with dogs, I was doing it or talking about it. Even in old family videos I was drawing dogs on my etch-a-sketch, crawling around and barking, playing with my millions of dog stuffed animals. In high school, my teacher actually "banned" me from doing any art pieces with dogs because that's pretty much all I would draw or put in my art! My final art show in college was, one guess, DOGS! I painted, drew and had a digital piece of several different dog portraits and won several awards for them.
Needless to say, dogs are my inspiration for my leather collars. Having two unique dogs, I had always been looking for the PERFECT collar for them. My rescued lab mix, Parker, is a black dog with piercing, ice blue eyes. Her collar needed to be something as unique as she was. My other dog Summit is a saluki, a very ancient and gorgeous breed of dog. Same for him, I was looking for a stunning collar one that would catch people eye's as he so often did. After a lot of thinking and designing, I finally came up with the PERFECT collar for both.
That's what I am hoping to accomplish with my shop, help dedicated dog owner's and lovers like myself, find the PERFECT collar for their dogs. Each collar is lovingly hand made. I start out with a huge piece of veg tanned leather and begin the design process. Once I decide what shape for the collar and decide on measurements, and math (this is where my wonderful husband so patiently helps me), I cut out what I need. I then transfer the finalized design to tracing film, which I then lay over the leather so I can transfer the image. Once the design has been imprinted on the leather I start cutting out the design so I can then hand carve it, giving it the relief needed to make it more 3D. Once the design is carved and the background is stamped, I will hand paint the leather to make the design pop even more. Once the dye is completely dry, I apply several coats of finish that helps give the collars shine and gives them a water resistant coating. I then set all the rivets and assemble the collar. Depending on the difficulty of the design, making a collar can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete.
But even with all this hard work and effort, nothing compares to a happy client who is beyond ecstatic when they receive one of my collars and sends me pictures with their beloved pet modelling their new piece of art! They finally have their own PERFECT collar, the same feeling I had when I made my dogs their own PERFECT collars!

Shop policies
Please specify when ordering if you would like a MARTINGALE, a SLIP COLLAR, or a BUCKLE COLLAR. Please read below how to measure for each type of collar.
When measuring for your MARTINGALE COLLAR:
For the first measurement, take a string or measuring tape and measure around the widest part of your dog's head snugly, but not too tight. This should be just in front of the ears, around the head/cheeks, and under the chin.
PLEASE BE SURE TO DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR MEASUREMENTS!
When measuring for your SLIP COLLAR:
If you are purchasing a CUSTOM SLIP COLLAR that is 1 inch where the o rings are and widens to more than an inch, I will need the same two measurements needed if you were measuring for a martingale collar:
For the first measurement, take a string or measuring tape and measure around the widest part of your dog's head snugly, but not too tight. This should be just in front of the ears, around the head/cheeks, and under the chin.
For the second measurement, take a string or measuring tape and measure around the dogs neck at the smallest part, snugly but not too tight. This should be just behind the ears around and under the chin where it joins the neck.
If you are purchasing a SIMPLE SLIP COLLAR that is the same width the whole length of the collar, I will need the measurement for around the widest part of your dog's head snugly, but not too tight. This should be just in front of the ears, around the head/cheeks, and under the chin.
PLEASE BE SURE TO DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR MEASUREMENTS!
When measuring for your BUCKLE COLLAR:
If you are purchasing a BUCKLE collar, you can measure one of two ways:
Take your dog's old buckle collar and measure from the middle part of the buckle (where the material folds around the buckle) to the hole that is currently being used.
OR
Take a piece of string or a measuring tape and measure around the dog's neck where you would like the collar to sit. I do add adjustment holes as well.
PLEASE BE SURE TO DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR MEASUREMENTS!

Payment
Depending on the detail of the design and how many collars I am working on at the time, your order may take 4-6 weeks to complete. Please remember I make each of these collars from scratch and by hand, it takes time to design, hand carve, hand paint, and assemble them. I want them each to be as well made and as perfect as possible for each of my clients!
Again, please double and triple check your measurements as I do not have your pet with me and cannot do the measuring myself. This is the only way to guarantee the correct collar size for your pet!
If you are purchasing a collar with your dog's name on it, again, please double and triple check the spelling! No returns on custom name collars.
No returns or refunds if your pet chews or otherwise ruins the collar.
Returns are accepted ONLY if the collar is unused and is NOT a custom name or custom hand-carved collar.
I will offer a credit towards a new or replacement collar if there is a defect in the leather and/or hardware in the first two weeks, provided the collar has been taken care of and has not been chewed or otherwise compromised by your pet.
I DO REQUIRE FULL PAYMENT BEFORE I SEND THE COLLAR. Thank you!

Additional policies and FAQs
Each collar has been treated with several coats of water-resistant professional finish, which will help protect it in the rain and if it accidentally gets wet. However, it is not recommended you use your leather collar if your dog loves to swim, or if the collar will be submerged for any long period of time. Soaking the collar repeatedly could eventually cause the leather to waken or even rot, and could ruin the dye job and cause colors to change or bleed. If your dog will be swimming, please take a long a nylon collar or one made to go into the water.
If your collar does accidentally get wet, (i.e, you get caught in heavy rain on a walk for an entire hour) just let it air dry. This has happened to me on several occasions and the collars and dye jobs have survived, though the colors did seem to darken a little.
If your collar becomes dirty (mud), just take a slightly damp paper towel or cloth and wipe down the collar.
Fading, a slight change in dye colors, and stretching of the leather is natural and will happen the more you use your collar. How quickly and the degree of this will also depend on the activity level of your dog.
Leather is tough and durable but not many things are immune to the teeth of a dog! Keep this in mind if you are looking to purchase a collar for a puppy or a dog that likes to chew!
