Customer Comments:

"I have been a client of Lisa Genesta's for some years.
Though I have been an actor since the early 80's, I have been a collector since the age of eleven, which is close to four decades ago now. Lisa's wares are as dependable, charming, and reasonable as the lady herself. She is a wonderful source for period textiles and a good source of fun. Warmest recommendation and a pinch on the cheeks is what she elicits from me." - Bronson Pinchot

"I have been a customer of Ruins-ca for several years and have only obtained the highest quality of trims, laces and fabrics for use in producing quilts. In fact, I have purchased some items two and three items again because I was so satisfied with their uniqueness. Mrs. Genesta has provided items for her customers found no where else consistently and has gone out of her way to find items she knows her customers like and can use. It has always been a pleasure to peruse her site, knowing some wonderful item eventually will show up to tantalize me. I have found her descriptions of the items I have purchased to be true." Jeanette Isaac

"Ruins-ca is a must for all textile lovers! If you are looking for that charm of yesteryear you have certainly found the right place. Lisa has quite an eye for exceptional and hard to find vintage and antique textiles. She only carries textiles of the highest quality - fabrics to be cherished for years to come." - Kayte Vaughan

"I have had a number of transactions and am delighted with my purchases. In my experience Ruins-ca has demonstrated exquisite taste, great communication and honesty. The feedback for Ruins-ca is extremely positive." Susan Brown

"I love your fabric and I've been collecting antique fabrics for years now."...."The quality is wonderful, shipping is fast and you are great to do business with." - Sue Penn

"One of my most favourite collections, is that of my antique fabric and trim. I buy antique and vintage French fabrics mainly from Ruins-ca. She has a wonderful eye and I have never been disappointed. I then have these cushions made up, by a fabulous sewer." Tracey Schreier

About

Our Lives in RUINS

I'm a third generation shmatta dealer. My father was a well-respected manufacturer of women's clothing with headquarters in NYC. He followed in the footsteps of my grandfather, The King of Slacks (yes, that was his company's name), best known for putting the pants on Rosie the Riveter. My father's designers collected antique and vintage notions and fabric. As a child, I made fashion dolls from the trim and fabric swatches to the pitter-patter and clicking sounds of the numerous sewing machines working away in my father's sample room on Broadway.

I bid farewell to the East Coast in 1990 and moved to Laguna Beach, California. Soon thereafter, I met Johnny at a very cool Halloween party. He was dressed as the Pope in full regalia. Over time, we discovered that we both loved antique architectural salvage, Spanish Colonial antiques and antique European textiles. Johnny and I became business partners before we married and we opened our first retail antique and decorative arts shop in Laguna Beach in 1991.

Johnny and I had two retail stores in Laguna Beach and West LA and a warehouse in Orange Country for approximately twenty years, under the names of Architectural Elements, Calliope Court and finally, Ruins. We specialized in utilizing antique architectural salvage as indoor design elements and worked closely with designers and architects from across the Country. Ruins was well known for its unique inventory and elaborately decorated store windows. Our antique lighting can be seen today in numerous restaurants across the country, including a number of the Hard Rock Cafes.

Ruins had many celebrity clients over the years. The designer Mossimo turned an antique French zinc baptismal fountain into a sink for his bathroom. Another time, Johnny helped Faye Dunaway create a white-washed grotto in her Beverly Hills backyard. Even Disneyland's designers became good customers and decorated their feature Aladdin, as well as the Disney French Quarter, with architectural salvage purchased from Ruins. We have so many fun memories and stories. We were fortunate to work with top demolition companies from across America and also journeyed to Europe, discovering beautiful old things for our stores at the marches in Paris and the South of France. We also had incredible pickers, who searched for gorgeous things across America and Europe for us.

Our lives were very busy by 2001. Johnny and I had just arrived home from an East Coast buying trip when I broke my neck. All I did was lift a heavy iron urn, and in an instant, this freak accident prevented me from ever again lifting and carrying heavy objects.

Johnny and I eventually closed both our retail stores and warehouse and decided to concentrate much of our efforts on-line, reinventing ourselves as Ruins-Ca by selling antique European textiles, fabrics and trims (far easier for me to handle after hurting my neck). The internet changed the way we did business. We sold our goods at antique and vintage shows across the country, on the Ruins website, eBay and Rubylane, until we discovered Etsy in 2008, when it was a fledgling business and new to the web. It's been so exciting to watch Etsy grow, from its humble beginnings in Brooklyn with a hand full of crafters and new supplies dealers, into the huge and popular website that it is today. It makes us very happy to know that RuinsCa contributed to that growth. When we started on Etsy in 2008, RuinsCa (our Etsy name) was the only Etsy seller offering antique European fabrics and trimmings for sale. I guess that makes us trend setters. My father would have certainly loved that I went back to playing with fabric and trimmings for a living!

In our spare time, both Johnny and I are multi-media artists. I am a jeweler and cast/fabricate silver, while Johnny works in ceramics, paints and is a photographer. His website is Johngenestaphotography.com.

Lastly and most importantly, Johnny and I work with developmentally disabled adults in Coachella Valley, our home since 2012. We teach a weekly painting class at Desert Arc in Palm Desert and Johnny helps teach a weekly pottery class in La Quinta. We also volunteer as bowling coaches for the California Special Olympics. Helping the developmentally disabled in our community live creative and fulfilling lives has become the most important and rewarding work that we do and have ever done.

So now you know a bit more about Johnny, me and RuinsCa. Thanks for taking the time to read our story and have fun browsing through RuinsCa on Etsy!
