Whimsical Art for the Young at Heart
The Story Behind the Whimsy.
If you have met me then you know I am a bit of a character, so is my husband…and definitely my kids. Heck even my dog and cats are crazy! We enjoy life, even with all its lumps; we still find a reason to find humor in things.
My art reflects my whimsical and humorous side. If someone can look at my art and smile, then I feel I am doing my part in the world to bring joy. Let’s face it life can be really difficult at times. I am a perfect example of that.
When I was 20 years old, I was in a pretty serious car accident that has left me to suffer from chronic pain in my hands, neck and shoulders. I haven’t worked a “conventional” job since I was 24 due to the pain. I had a hard time during that period because I was in the process of getting my BA in Fine Art. Since then I have had multiple surgeries and continue to get treatment for pain. It was a terrible realization that the thing I loved the most, art, was probably never going to be more than a hobby due to the pain. I used to do these dramatic, large, extremely details oil paintings. Unfortunately the pain in my hand keeps me from doing that type of work anymore. I have been known to tape paint brushes to my hand, so it wasn't for a lack of trying!
Flash forward to the year 2009 when I opened my little shop of whimsy! I was married (and I still am) and had two beautiful boys (and I still have those two, as well) when I had the proverbial light bulb click on, maybe I couldn't do the art I used to do but that doesn't mean I couldn't paint at all. What I had realized was that my interests had changed. I guess it was being around my kids and their love of color and fun, but when I started coming up with art concepts each one was not dramatic and over the top, instead they were just FUN.
One of my fist knob designs was my cookie knobs. I mean, how cute are they? Knobs that look like cookies…I was over the moon at how clever I was. Then other ideas just started flowing. I was up to my ears in color and fun. My poor husband couldn't get a wink of sleep because I would wake him every time I finished a new product or had a new idea. I have over 500 products so you could imagine all the times I woke him. He rolls with the punches, but in the morning he would never remember so, of course, I would show him again! He’s my biggest fan and it’s our tradition, so I will probably never stop doing it.
Do I still have pain? Sure I do, but I will never let it keep me from living, and loving, life. Is my art the most practical? I understand that a mass produced, plastic, wall switch plate will cover the outlet just as effectively as one of my hand painted, whimsical, delightful and colorful switch plates. But let’s face it, for a few buck more…which would YOU rather have?! Each time you switch on a light, open a drawer, look at your wall, take out a tissue, open a box, place a photo in my frame I will have brought YOU a touch of whimsy and color into your life.
So now you know the story behind my whimsy and why I love what I do. I encourage you to find the whimsy in your life and every time you purchase an item from me, Rusti Lee, you are embracing your desire to find the “silver lining” in this crazy thing we call LIFE!
