Namaste and Welcome to my store, Rustic Passport Studio - for handmade fashion explorers. Hi! I am Nikki C ( Namrata Chhatbar), owner and designer of this wonderful space. The question might be why Rustic Passport and what's the story behind it?
❤️ Well, Rustic because I connect with artists from rural locations to preserve the fading age-old art by metamorphing it into modern cuts. Passport because you will have the same experience as stepping out of the country and enjoying this art. While we are starting with India, our long-term plan is to offer you the art from different parts of the world. After all, we are all connected!
🌱A seed was sown more than a decade ago, when I went to internal villages of Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. I was working for a fashion house then as a recent graduate of business and fashion designing. I was awestruck when I saw the beautiful and international-award-winning art. Before I could cherish it, I was saddened to know how much underprivileged and underrated these artists were, which resulted unemployment (and suicide in many cases!) Digitalization, mass production, and urbanization caused fading of this art and younger generation opted to move out of this family-owned business. I could feel their pain, After all, we are all connected!
My passion for fashion with compassion is finally thriving and I feel content to be able to bring this art to you! Currently I have four production partners in India who help me make designs into reality. They are scattered in different states of India - Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat and I am so grateful to them for helping me make this dream come true. My aim is to work primarily with female entrepreneurs and artists. As a teen I used to design and make my own clothing, jewelry, shoes, bags, crafts, gifts and home decor. Now, being a mom I have different responsibilities but I still love designing and looking forward to launch my clothing line in Spring of 2021. So let's connect!
My Mission: Create awareness about sustainability, reviving age old art there by promoting artist and empowering women.
♻️ I love incorporating natural materials and handmade art in my products. I like naturally breathable and recyclable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, hemp and other natural fabrics like silk and wool. I vote for chemical free natural dyes, hand carved hand block printing, hand weaving, and handloom. We mainly use these materials: Earrings: Brass, Clay, Wood, German Silver and other metal and stones; footwear - fabric, beads, recyclable TPR, genuine leather and other materials. We make brass clutches using hand carving or/and hand hammer technique which is very intricate and takes about a month to make one piece.
Wearing and Creating products that are handmade and uses natural materials give me joy, satisfaction and the feel of connection ❤️ - the connection with mother earth 🌎, the connection with emotions and love of the artists 🖐️. This makes me feel content, connected 🙏 and at peace ☮️.
