Excellent communication with the artist. She wrote back quickly and is very easy to talk to. These little gems are even more lovely in person than the photograph lets on. The subject matter and the style go so well together... I hope to purchase more of her work in the future. Just beautiful!

About

Why not draw in wood?

One day a few years ago I asked a friend of mine, an art major, to show me how to make woodcuts for printing. My first attempt was pretty rewarding, and soon I was roping in my (then) new woodworker boyfriend into helping me find tools and wood for my new hobby.

He was convinced that the pieces of wood themselves were much more interesting than the printed sheets of paper, and he finally persuaded me to start presenting these carvings on their own and see if other people liked them too. While I have always enjoyed drawing and creating, these wood carvings were the first inkling I had of how I could share my way of seeing with the world. The solidity of the material, and the painstaking process of the carving, give them presence and solidity beyond a mere sketch.

Now I live with that same boyfriend in a cozy Portland house, where I split my time between my personas as artist, landscape designer (my day job), and urban farmer. He generously helps with sourcing and milling the wood for my blocks, and soon we plan to start collaborating on furniture with integrated carving. Stay tuned ....

Welcome to woodcuts and other art by Ryestraw.

I source most of my wood from local small-scale mills that process salvaged or sustainably harvested trees.

The blocks are painted black with an artist's spray paint that is less toxic than the hardware store variety, and produced in Spain.

The finished pieces receive a light protective coat of rub-on polyurethane finish.

The notecards are printed on recycled paper, by a local family business.
