About

A Love that Lives to be Creative

It's so ideal, don't you think... Two artists meet in college; share their passion for art, fall for each other, get married, and end up spending their lives together being creative. It's really a dream come true.

Shannon is the truly creative one of our team. He specializes in large format photography and traditional processes. Many days you will see him under the dark cloth focusing his 4x5 view camera or perfecting his next handmade pinhole camera. On other days he will be in the darkroom, processing negatives and printing black and white images, or working out the formula for some old chemical process. The images and concepts he comes up with continue to astound me.

I am Colleen and I enjoy shooting with my vintage Speed Graflex camera that I can stick into the tightest of places. The medium format gives me a versatility that allows me to capture whatever has just caught my eye while maintaining a certain quality from this size of film.. I also do most of the writing around here because that is part of my 'other' job: Cocktails Expert for About.com, creator of SCDrinkStudio.com, contributor to magazines, author of books, etc.

We have been running S&C Design Studios since we were married and moved to New England, nearly two decades ago. Our specialties are commercial and fine art photography. Around the turn of the century, we moved back to the quiet life of the Midwest and settled down to officially open a studio. We were on a typical American Main Street and ran an intimate art gallery, though our new studio in a secluded location is much more ideal for our work, allowing us to concentrate uninterrupted on what we love to do.

The studio is wildly decorated because we think it is important to have fun at work and that a creative environment is important to the creative process. This place is ideal for experimentation and we are both reverting more and more into traditional photographic processes, including some of the very first techniques used in this scientific art form.

The darkroom is our little piece of heaven and where we spend a great deal of time creating the hand-printed silver gelatin prints that you see on this site. Two large format enlargers allow us to work side-by-side, collaborating, critiquing, and encouraging each other in our work.

We primarily photograph still life subjects, many of which are antique or vintage. It’s true that we are very nostalgic, not only for the origins of our medium, but for the objects and concepts that shaped modern society. It is very important to remember the past and celebrate it by looking at it with an open mind. There is a beauty in the ordinary when you stop to really examine its form, texture, and finer details and we attempt to capture that in our work.

It is a fun life and we're happy to be able to share our vision.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

We are here to please and would be delighted for our work to find a place in your life. Please contact us with any questions, including custom orders, wholesale inquiries, or image licensing.

Many images are available for custom orders including size, presentation, and more.

If you want it, we can do it, just ask!

Why are your photographs more expensive than others?

We have been working as professional photographers for two decades and take great care and pride in our work.

All of our work is printed using the highest quality, archival materials, we do not sell inkjet or dye-sub prints. These are REAL photographs printed in our own darkroom or at a professional lab that we have worked with for years. Quality matters.

What is special about your hand-printed B&W photographs?

Straight out of the darkroom, HPA's are our prized prints that have the feel and look that no digital image can duplicate. We spend hours producing each silver gelatin print from start to finish. Every step is done by hand and we use only the best fine art materials to produce them.

Our small, medium, and large format films and fiber papers have been selected from years of experience and are those that we feel work best with our style of photography.

The prints are limited editions (typically 5-15 prints for each negative) and many are one-of-a-kind due to special techniques we use in the darkroom or camera .

These prints are presented in a hand-cut mount and mat presentation that is ready for a frame to match your decor.

Do you offer local pick-up?

If you can visit our studio in Cedar Falls, Iowa, we would be happy to have you pick up our work in person. Please contact us and we can waive shipping fees and arrange a time.

We will even treat you to a complimentary cup of espresso. It's the best in town!

Why is the shipping cost high on some pieces?

Our hand-printed photographs automatically come matted and mounted for both shipping safety and easy display purposes. These will have additional packaging to ensure safe delivery.

These are original pieces of artwork and not easy to reproduce (in some cases, they CANNOT be reproduced). We do have to charge higher shipping rates on these pieces because of the extra packaging that is required to protect them while in transit.

How is your photography different than digital photography?

We view our work as fine art and believe in preserving and practicing the tradition of photography.

Our approach goes beyond what has become common practice in modern photography. In fact, our work does not touch a computer until it is 'art show ready!'

We put as much time and energy into our photographic artwork as a painter does into an original oil on canvas.

Each image takes hours (or days) to produce and everything is done by the artist's hands.

We spend hours composing or finding the photograph and capturing it on film. In the darkroom, hours are spent perfecting every aspect to produce the best prints possible. Once the prints are made, we retouch each with a brush and dyes and finish them in hand-cut mats.

How do you ship your work?

All orders will be shipped via First Class USPS, UPS, or FedEx (dependent on current rates and destination) within 3-5 business days of order and receipt of payment. A tracking number will be sent to you once the package is in transit.

Faster shipping options and international shipping is available; please contact us to get a quote.

Do you offer discounts if I want to buy multiple photographs?

Absolutely! Many of our pieces can be displayed together to create a dynamic feature wall and we would be happy to help you design it. (We actually shoot in series, so in reality they were meant for each other!)

If you are interested in 2 or more of our prints, please contact us and we will develop a custom listing with a discounted price.

In general, we offer the following:
- 2-3 photographs: Buy one (or two), get one 1/2 off
- 4 or more photographs: Buy three (or more), get one free
