How it all started....

I’ve always made things. I know how cliché that sounds: “Oh, when did you become an artist?” “Well, I’ve been painting since I was in the womb!” But really, I’ve always been creative, and I always believed I’d translate it one day into a career. I was always the girl drawing people in class rather than taking notes. I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

As a senior in high school, I became insanely disenchanted with the lack of support for those wishing to pursue creative fields. As the school board was finalizing their plans to build a third gym, we art students were running out of paper and had to use the backs of completed creations while bringing paint from home. I started painting the school: first a ceiling tile in the art room, next a window looking out to the hall. The Vice Principal took notice and asked me to paint a large bay window separating his office from the main office. I gladly accepted the challenge and spent the next few months on the project.

One day I ran out of paint. I squeezed one of the last tubes of acrylic dry and realized, as they were bustling about preparing for the gymnasium addition, that I couldn’t stay. I told the VP after I was done with the mural I wouldn’t be back, and I kept my word. I know that might sound silly and short sighted, but the day I left, I knew I was going to make it regardless. Two months later I attended a portfolio review at the local college and was accepted on the spot. That was really the beginning of my personal quest to make it as an artist.

I quit my job in February of 2003 when I was 5 months pregnant with my little guy. I was in college and was burning the candle at both ends — full-time college student waiting tables at a local restaurant whilst my belly swelled, and I slowly started to realize all of that was not going to work. I started selling my work on eBay and did pretty well there, but the fees were insane. I mean, one month my fees were more than our rent. It might have said I was a silver powerseller over there, but that means little if you’re paying out more than half of that between fees and general business expenses (paints, canvas, shipping supplies, etc.). I had thought it wasn’t such a bad thing at the time because we had two incomes and I was feeling my way around my new venture.

Then, in early 2005, my son was diagnosed with autism. There was a huge change in the family dynamic… Things hadn’t been going so well for my son’s father and I, so in late 2005 we split up, and I found myself alone. It was all squarely on my shoulders for the first time in my life, and I had a two year old to care for and no steady paycheck. Talk about struggle. We ended up in a one bedroom apartment in a nasty part of the city, my son occupying the only bedroom while I set up camp in the livingroom. Those were supremely hard times. I didn’t even have a phone for a month and had to walk down to this biker bar at the end of the road to use the pay phone. Luckily, my landlord liked my work, so for a while we traded art for rent.

At the same time I was trying my hand at getting into a gallery in the Hamptons. The owner of the gallery was extremely helpful and encouraging and paid ahead for artwork to be shown in the gallery. I even sold my car for a pittance to be able to pay a month’s worth of bills. When I could no longer afford to purchase supplies to create new paintings, I was forced to admit to myself — and the gallery owner — that I wasn’t able to guarantee new work for an approaching solo show. We parted ways. I couldn’t keep going on like that anymore. I wasn’t going to be able to survive much longer and something had to change.

Then, around Christmas 2006 on the eBay message boards, I read about a relatively new site. The site was Etsy, and there was a lot of buzz around it in the art community. Many questioned its viability. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose by giving it a try. Within two days of signing up I sold a $200.00 painting and was able to pay my utilities for the month. It was the first sign of hope I had in nearly two years. With that one single sale I realized it was possible. There was something to Etsy, and I needed to make it work.

The rest, as they say, is history :)

Frequently asked questions
Are the prints signed?

No. These are sent straight from the professional printer to you. I only offer signed prints through the gallery circuit and in brick and mortar locations.

What's the difference between Photo Paper, Watercolor Paper and Canvas prints?

Photo paper is glossy and smooth. They are printed on heavy photo paper and have a gloss sheen. They need to be framed.

Watercolor paper is lightly textured with a matte finish. The texture is the paper only - it's the same paper artists use to paint watercolor paintings on! They need to be framed.

Canvas prints are ready to hang, stretched around bars and mounted. The canvas wraps around the sides of the bars and the image continues on the sides so there is no need to frame unless you want to.

None have the texture of the paint - I can not find a printer to offer this at a reasonable price.

All are saturated in gorgeous color - it just depends on your personal preferences!

What happens if my package goes missing?

It is SUPER RARE for a package to fall off the radar, but it can happen.

As the seller we are responsible for your package until it is delivered.
A package is not considered missing until 30 days after shipment. Tracking is included with all purchases, and if tracking stops for an extended period of time (over a week domestically, 30 days internationally) I can put a trace on it and have USPS search specifically for it.

Please note - Once the package tracking states that it has been delivered, then our responsibility has ended.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS - A package is NOT considered missing if it is simply held in customs. That is between you and your country, and I have no power over how long they hold your package in customs.

Can I return my purchase?

Unless there is a real difference between what was presented in the listing online and what was received, I do not accept returns.

My item arrived damaged. What do I do?

Please contact me immediately and take pictures of the packaging and the damaged product. Please send those along in a message here or an email to sagittariusgallery@gmail.com with your order number.

A new print will be sent asap to replace the damaged one. All other damaged or incorrect products receive full refunds.

If it is an original painting that was damaged, I can not send a new one - a refund will be remitted. But I will need all images of packaging to file an insurance claim. I will also need it to be returned to me (unless it is completely destroyed, in which case I will need pics.) It is rare something like this happens, but it is not outside the realm of possibility.

I am an international customer - will I be charged customs / duty fees?

Many countries assess duties and taxes on imported packages. Sometimes these fees can be quite high. If you are uncertain of the amount that you could be assessed, you might want to check on it and cancel the order if you think this could be a problem. After I confirm shipment, the cancellation option is no longer available.

Generally, you will use "photographic print", "canvas print", or "original painting" as the product description. I can't confirm the accuracy of this calculator, but it should give you a general idea. There might also be a handling charge. Ask your post office.

Will you mark my order as "Gift" so I won't have to pay any customs fees?

No. It is illegal and I will not risk my business over it. Please do not ask me to do this - I won't. Ever.

I am an international customer, talk to me about customs and how long it will take to receive my package.

I ship as soon as possible and my processing times are clear in each listing - please understand though that I am *not* in charge of how long a package takes to make it through your country's customs. Once your package has shipped, you receive tracking, and it is no longer in my hands - the US post office has it, or it's in transit over an ocean, or customs has it, or your postal service has it.

Please allow time for your package to clear customs and make its way to you. I can't make it go any faster, and you have tracking to show exactly where it is along the journey to you.

Keep track of tracking and speak to your post office if it gets held up at the destination. This is *your*responsibility.

I used the wrong shipping address! What now?

First, you need to update your Etsy account to only have the correct shipping address.

If you didn't realize the wrong address was on your order and you contact me before the item is shipped, I may be able to change the address. This only applies to prints and originals. I can not change addresses on any other product in my store.

If you contact me after it has shipped, I'm sorry, there is nothing I can do. I can not change the address on an already shipped package. If it is returned to me, I can re-send - but you will need to pay to have it reshipped. If I don't receive it back, you need to speak to the post office - it is out of my hands.
