About

Origami-inspired paper creations that blend modern design and whimsy

I've always been captivated by the possibilities of a simple piece of paper. Familiar, inexpensive, and readily accessible, it is just waiting to be transformed. I started experimenting with origami a few years ago, but the diagrams were hard to read and the end result was often less than satisfying. I found it quite frustrating. So being a minimalist at heart, I started breaking it down into it's more basic elements and seeing what I could create. This lead to making the "How to Fold a Paper Airplane" framed works that I started giving as gifts to friends. The response was so positive, that I began to consider other things I could make with a similar approach to detail and design that also inspired the same sense of wonder. I then discovered unit or modular origami and the possibilities seemed endless.

Earlier this year, I left a career in communications to begin working as an artist full-time (I'm also an abstract painter). Since then, I've tried out many different ideas and arrived at a line of cards, art, and objects that allow me to express my interests in nature, structure, and geometry with a little whimsy and magic thrown in for good measure. Making things is both challenging and the place where I feel the most playful. My intention is for my work to blend attention to design with a spirit of play.

My company name comes from a familiar and somewhat nostalgic piece of origami better known as the fortune teller or cootie catcher. I didn't feel either of those names really suited a craft company, so landed on it's lesser known name, salt cellar.

WORKSHOPS
I'll be hosting two workshops on November 26 & 29 in my studio in downtown Toronto. You can find out all the information on the event registration page: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/paper-ornament-workshop-tickets-19463512891
I'm also available for workshops at other studios, schools, and private events.
