I just received my personalized leather dog collar for my dog Oakley. I am saving it as a Christmas present for him but I did sneak in a try-on and it fits perfectly!

Leathercraft's allure is its versatility. Create a 3D relief carving of anything you can imagine, colour it, then craft it into something you can use.

My passion for leathercraft began when I started making sighthound collars for my Saluki dogs. The creative process was so rewarding that before long, I had far more collars than dogs, and a never-ending stream of ideas for more! Thus began my endeavour to bring my creations to you and your dogs.

Everything is hand crafted, and the only machine I occasionally use is a dremel for edge burnishing. It's all hand tooled (carved), or sewn using designs of my own imagination – or yours!.

The origin of the name SalukiFeathers is my favourite part of my Salukis: the silky feathering on their ears and tails. I hope you all view my handmade collars with the same fondness I have for my Saluki Feathers!

Welcome to SalukiFeathers!

All collars, belts, bracers, and other leather treasures are handmade using traditional tools and leather of the best quality, be it vegetable tanned for tooling, bridle, latigo, and harness for strength, or soft chrome-tanned leather for accents and linings. I pay special attention to detail, symmetry, and technique, and I strive to come up with designs unlike any other.

I've been a canvas and digital artist for many years, have been a self-taught leatherworker since 2011, with an Etsy shop since 2012. I've discovered that I have a knack for taking an obscure concept or technique and transforming it into a leather reality. As a hobbyist who *sometimes* sells her finished products, I don't have a company or tax details. If this eventually takes off to the point that I turn it into a profession, then I might go that route - but for now you're dealing with *me* the individual who does this for fun in the hopes of selling a few items here and there to help pay for my hobby.

Payment is due at the time the order/purchase is placed. I am currently only accepting PayPal for payments. For those of you in the US, Canada, and the UK, please be sure that your Paypal address is confirmed/verified. If it is not, I will have to cancel and refund the order.
I use the lowest-cost shipping method that provides a tracking number via Canada Post; XpressPost for Canadians or TrackedPacket for Americans and other countries that accept it. Expedited shipping is available upon request at an extra charge: please send a message prior to payment if you choose to go this route, and I will update the listing with shipping prices to your location.

Most collars will be packed in a 7" x 5" x 4" box to protect against crushing. Smaller items may be packed in a bubble wrap package.

Shipping times tend to be less than 1 week for Canada and between 1-2 weeks for the USA. If you're ordering from outside of Canada or the USA that don't accept Canada Post's Tracked Packet, I'll need to look up the exact pricing for your area with a tracking number. Shipping without tracking and insurance is too risky for a custom item takes many hours to craft.

International shipments tend to take 1-3 weeks depending on the location. Import duties, taxes, and customs charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

If the wrong shipping address is supplied by the buyer, and the buyer doesn't notify me before the shipment is dispatched, then the buyer will be responsible for the cost of shipping the item again after it returns back to me. If the package is not picked up at the post office and is returned to me, the buyer will be responsible for the cost of shipping the item a second time.

EXPEDITED to Canada and USA: While Etsy is pushing me to offer expedited shipping, faster shipping from Canada may be a waste of money on your end, considering it costs 3-4x more (for Canada and USA) than the regular rate for tracked packet. I've done the research and shipped hundreds of packages, with a good share being expedited with Fedex. The expedited service isn't reliable, and will not stand with their policies with regards to delivery times and insurance without a huge hassle on both your and my end. Your best value for shipping an item is any method that has tracking and insurance at the lowest cost to you, even if it takes a few days more. I've had shipments that took LONGER with Fedex than regular tracked Canada Post, though Fedex charged an order of magnitude more!
Refunds and Exchanges
Refunds and Exchanges are available upon return of an item in the same condition as it was when originally shipped to the buyer.

The buyer must pay for the cost of return shipping, and the item must be returned within 10 days of receiving it. Items must be in the same condition as when shipped. Items lost or damaged during return shipment are the responsibility of the buyer, unless the buyer has purchased insurance on the shipment (in which case the shipping or insurance company will handle the claim for a lost package). Tracked Packet (my most-used shipping service) already comes with $100 insurance, and a higher insurance value can be purchased before shipping if it's a high-value package. If the item is lost or damaged on its way to the buyer, insurance can be claimed with cooperation with the buyer up to $100, or the amount of insurance declared and purchased before shipping.

Custom orders are non refundable. Custom products are any products that vary at all from a listing that indicates that the product is already made.

If I made an error in the crafting of the product, such as stamping the wrong name or number or sending the wrong size per your order details, I will replace it ASAP. Please contact me if this occurs.

If you ordered a custom item and measured incorrectly and it just doesn't fit, no refunds or exchanges are possible. Please make sure to measure twice, I will as well! In a case such as this, at the buyer's request I can try to re-sell the item (if it doesn't have a custom name or number stamped), and if/when it sells, the sale price may be allocated to making you something new. Should this occur and you will return me the item to resell, the item must be in the same condition as when shipped to you. Items lost or damaged during return shipment are the responsibility of the customer, unless you have purchased insurance on your shipment.

Please note that items cannot be returned or exchanged if they are damaged (water or mishandling being the two most common reasons for leather to be damaged). Please read the Leather FAQ to learn now to treat your item to best protect it, and how best to care for it regularly. All leather products require regular care, be they collars, belts, bags, jackets, shoes, or other.
Additional policies and FAQs
1. How do I care for my new leather collar?

Leather is a natural skin and is not waterproof. All of our pieces are coated in a water-resistant oil and a top coat that will keep it safe from the occasional drop here and there but please, do not immerse your leather in water for any length of time. The leather will absorb water, warp, and the stain may wash away. Repeated exposure to water eventually rots leather and weakens it to the point it will snap with any pressure. If it does happen to get a splash on it, allow it to dry fully, don't wipe or rub it. Condition it after it has dried.

If your dog loves to swim, please use a nylon collar for those times. Also, remove the leather collar for baths and any other splashy good times!

You will certainly want to condition your leather pieces over time. When available, I'll send a little jar of my own homemade leather conditioner with every order, and it will do the job well when applied lightly. If this jar has been used up, lost, or misplaced, most commercial conditioners will do the job, though you should test it first on an inconspicuous spot to be sure it won't stain your item.

2. Will my collar look exactly like the one in the picture?

Pictures are very dependent upon the lighting conditions, backgrounds.. and even the screen you're viewing them from. I can tell you from my years of digital photography experience that every photo from every possible angle can be slightly different. What you see in the photo is what it looks like from the angle and in the lighting that I try to take most of my photos - being natural mid-day diffused light, occasionally augmented with artificial "day" coloured lights when the weather doesn't otherwise permit. I do my best to represent the item in it's actual colours (and iridescence, in the case of some paints and inlaid stones). I don't go out of my way to enhance photos other than basic cropping and light balance levels.

3.Will my custom collar look exactly the way that I imagine it? What do I need to consider before presenting a new collar idea?

Unless you have telepathic mind-reading powers and can see what I'm imagining, then probably not.. unless you supplied me with a detailed sketch of what you had in mind and a painting of what colours you like. When I'm making a custom piece,

I get a -LOT- of requests for custom art on a collar without much direction to go on. These experiences have taught me that I need a clear description of your vision with concepts, examples, etc. for me to give you a sketch you'll be happy with; this will take me a week or two to complete, probably longer with revisions. Translating a concept to leather comes with the challenges of the canvas size, how small details can be carved (with the time and cost associated with this), and the limitation of colours (long-lasting dyes vs. light/iridescent surface paints that may wear off). If you have an idea and can portray roughly what will be the canvas of the collar/belt/other item, I'm happy to tell you at no cost whether it'll work straight out of the gate, or is something that will need more revision.

I love graphic arts, but my primary interest is in leatherworking. So, if you'd like to present a custom collar idea, please present me with a plan you believe will work for the canvas you have in mind.. in that you've thought of size, borders, the amount of detail in a given space, and how much wear you expect the item to endure.

I will almost always draw it out before I start working with the leather, and will be happy to send you pictures or scanned versions of my drawings. Please note that the more time I spend with you, the more the cost of the piece is likely to increase. I try to set a maximum number of revisions (usually three) to assure that we can share the same vision without wasting time. Please do keep in mind that there will always be some slight natural variations in leather products. Leather is a natural skin and thus can vary slightly from one piece to the next in texture and stain (colour) results. Letters and numbers are hand stamped, one by one, and while I will always do my best, they won't always be perfectly razor straight.

5. Why is International shipping (outside North America) so expensive?

The postage is based on the least expensive shipping method I could find that is reliable and also has a tracking number. With a package going halfway (or further) around the world, the odds of it getting lost or being delayed by months are much higher. Tracking assures not only that you get the item and can see where it is in the shipping process, but also provides insurance should it get lost or something damage it in transit. I do think Canada Post's International shipping costs are crazy, and I'm open to suggestions for less expensive options.

6. Why is the sky blue?

It has something to do with the atmosphere, or the oceans reflecting, or some such - if I recall correctly. Go read the Wikipedia entry on it if you're curious.
