About

My (edited) 10 page designer feature published in Belle Armoire Jewelry Summer 2013 issue by Ricë Freeman-Zachery

Sharona Nissan’s designs adorn fashion-forward celebrities from Cher and Janet Jackson to Ashanti, Britney Spears and Mary J. Blige and have graced the pages of Cosmopolitan, Essence, Modern Bride and Women’s Wear Daily, among others. Early on, Saks Fifth Avenue carried her work in 3 of its stores, including the flagship store in New York City. All of this was beyond exciting for someone who grew up in a family where she was not “The Artistic One.”
“It’s funny how childhood stigmas stay with you long after they’re gone,” Sharona says. She tried and never seemed to have the knack for creative expression that her brother Yuval displayed in abundance. “So it came to be known that he was the artist in the family; I, on the other hand, was the mathematician in the family.” By college, her path seemed to be set. She enrolled to study accounting, and quickly dropped out. It wasn’t until her second try where she double majored in film and communications/media studies, which she loved. Sharona was also just starting to make jewelry as a hobby. She hadn’t thought of turning it into a career, but a rep took note of her skill and suggested this could become a business. Almost immediately, Sharona had a rep and was getting good press.
“I was working out of my parents’ basement,” she remembers. She took her entire savings, borrowed the rest, and signed up for her first NYC trade show. “I barely covered expenses but kept going. In the next couple of years I really struggled.” She sat over her jewelry table in the basement until two or three every morning, perfecting her designs and creating one-of-a-kind pieces with turquoise, agate, freshwater pearls and rhinestones, teaching herself wire work as she went. Sometimes the long hours and lack of steady income were discouraging, but every time she thought about abandoning her jewelry and doing something else, something would happen that would spur her on: a new idea or great press or an order. “After about three years I actually started to make a living,” Sharona says. Two years later, she was picked up by Saks.
“At the time, I also increased my wholesale orders, hired three employees, and things were good.” Unfortunately, most of us know all too well what happened next: the economic crash hurt lots of people. The trade shows cost more than they brought in. Sharona’s beloved mother was terminally ill, and everything looked bleak.
Sharona took a couple of years to take care of her mother and then heal along with her brothers and father, and it wasn’t until 2011 that she took a look around her studio and noticed that she actually had a pretty good inventory on hand.
“I had opened my first Etsy shop back in 2009 but really neglected it,” she says. Since listing items in her shop was something she could do from her apartment in the evenings after working on new designs, she dusted off that shop and opened two more. While it hasn’t been “a rags to riches story” she says, she’s found a niche and connected with customers who love her work.
Everything in her studio has its place, of course, a necessity because this is, after all, a New York apartment. “It’s a small space that’s become much smaller with two large desks, one for computer and paper work, the larger one for my art,” she says of the room that functions as both office and studio. “Both on my art desk and below are hundreds of beads, crystals, wires, chain, findings, leather cords, rhinestones, tools, buckles and stones in drawers, shelves, small containers and large [ones].” Armoires behind each desk are filled with finished work, divided by Etsy shop.
Mornings begin with a walk with Kingston, her ruby Cavalier trying, Sharona reports, “to implement Cesar Milan’s recommendations for a happy, stable existence.” She’s hoping the Dog Whisperer’s rules can help Kingston work on his problematic self-assessment as a huge ferocious dog trapped in a cute little body.
Back home, another coffee, more email and then she slides into the zone where “the magic happens.” Multiple projects unfold at once as she moves back and forth among them, weaving the wire and working the stones. Her dad drops by to get any outgoing mail--for which Sharona is so grateful. She’s at the design desk until about 8 pm, when, theoretically, she’s finished for the day.
“After that it’s supposed to be my time, but after dinner, a shower and another stroll with Kingston, I often find myself on the couch with my computer listing new items or doing some photo editing, unless my friends show up in which case the computer gets tossed and I’m making pizza nachos for the girls.”
It’s a fulfilling life, and Sharona loves the work, from the exciting new designs to the calm of wiring; but what she loves most is knowing that the things she makes enrich the lives of the people who wear them. Hearing from her customers is simply the best.
“It’s really gratifying to know how they’re wearing it or how they’re enjoying it. This is why I do what I do.”

SampleSalebySharona was born out of the need to overturn access inventory and samples of earlier Sharona Nissan collections. Wanting to keep my Sharona Nissan shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/SharonaNissan cohesive, I decided on opening this second shop. This shop took off almost immediately and is here to stay. With affordable price points, and fun finds this shop has more mass appeal.

US CARRIERS
All domestic orders are shipped either UPS or USPS this will depend on what your shipping charges cover. I will always upgrade to UPS if sufficient shipping charges are paid. I personally always prefer shipping with UPS as they are dependable & reliable 100% of the time. It is the buyer’s responsibility to pay for any customs and import taxes that may apply. I'm not responsible for delays due to customs.

RETURNS
I stand behind my product 100%. If for any reason you are not satisfied with your purchase I will be glad to refund, repair or replace your item. Please carefully read details & exclusions below.

CANCELLATIONS ON READY TO SHIP ITEMS:
Orders consisting of ready to ship items may be canceled before they are shipped. If your order has been shipped out prior to cancellation, you will be required to go through the return process and shipping charges will be deducted from your refund, otherwise a full refund will be issued.

CUSTOM ORDERS & MADE TO ORDER ITEMS MAY NOT BE CANCELLED, EXCHANGED, OR REFUNDED. Please understand that custom orders devour a huge amount of time and resources. Aside from sourcing materials and having open lines of communications, custom orders slow down production immensely by having to allocate the time for them in the midst of the daily flow.

REFUNDS/EXCHANGES ON READY TO SHIP ITEMS:
Refunds and exchanges will only be issued on unused and unworn ready to ship merchandise. Please note that shipping charges will not be refunded. A return authorization is required for all refunds and exchanges. You must contact me within 14 business days of receiving your item, and ship it back within 15 business days.

Items that are ready to ship but need to be re-sized or finished off in order to ship, will incur a 10-20% restocking fee (this will depend on the amount of work involved and materials used. For example cuffs that are needed in a size other than the one listed, or cuffs that require wrist size in the item description, will require re working on my part prior to shipping. Materials like gold fill and sterling silver will incur a higher restocking fee than base metal items.

CONDITIONS OF RETURN
Buyers are also responsible for return shipping costs. Items returned must be in original condition and packaging.

Items must arrive at destination undamaged within no more than 30 days to be eligible for exchange or refund. I strongly urge shipping with a respectable carrier with tracking and insurance.

SPECIAL ORDERS
Special orders are orders commissioned by you the buyer. You may like a style in a different size or color. I’ll be more than happy to accommodate your special order. However, please note that special orders are not returnable and will take longer to ship

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
In order to maintain your Sharona Nissan purchase for life, following a few simple steps will really make a difference:
1. When not in use, lay flat (when applicable) inside of a plastic bag with most of the air removed. This one simple step will really keep your jewelry and/ or buckles looking great
2. When not in use, keep wrapped in tissue paper (or any other absorbent cloth such as paper towels or even cotton cloth), inside of a plastic bag. This is especially important for sterling silver, and when any kind of plating is used. The acids in our skin and elements react with metals causing oxidation. The absorbent cloth will act as a shield against these reactions.
3. Never immerse your jewelry in water or any other solvent.
4. Never spray perfume directly or indirectly on you jewelry.
5. Do not bend stretch or mistreat your jewelry. Although many of my pieces are bendable, this is intended for comfort and wear. My pieces are very well made and can withstand a lot. I can vouch for that because I’ve been wearing them for many years. However, misuse may result in unnecessary wear and tear.
6. If kept as noted above, you may never have to clean.

To clean (a step easily & best avoided):
1. Rub gently with damp cloth, and then rub gently with dry cloth.
2. Sterling silver clasps must be cleaned with a sterling silver cleaning cloth.

Remember, these are handmade pieces, so please treat them with the kindness and love they were made)

REPAIRS ON FULL PRICED ITEMS
If at any point your purchase will need a repair just drop me a note and send it back. I will be happy to repair it free of charge*.

*Some exclusions may apply. Charges may be incurred if item has been damaged or destroyed due to negligence or abuse. In all my years in business I have gotten so few repairs, so this is not a common occurrence or something that you should be concerned about. I like to think of myself as fair, just, and strive to put out quality products.

Repairs on sale or sample items
If at some point your SALE item will need to be repaired, please note there will be a minimum CHARGE for all repairs. Since samples are offered at a substantial reduction I cannot incur these fees.
