The Beginning of a Retirement Dream

Thank you for visiting our newly launched business; Sankofa N Silk. Sankofa is a term from the Akan, one of the many languages spoken in Ghana, West Africa where we once lived as missionaries. Sankofa literally means: “go back and fetch it.” The story of the Sankofa bird is based on an African proverb: “it is not taboo to go back and fetch that which you have forgotten,” meaning that you can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you came from.

The term “silk” in our name refers to our love for spinning and weaving silk. One of our favorite fibers is the sari silk waste that used to be discarded as useless. Now, artisans like us reclaim it and use it to make silk yarn. The myriad colors create a visual feast of one-of-a-kind art. And, there is silk noile, once considered unusable, now treasured for its delightful texture! For us, retrieving what was once discarded feels like a redemptive act.

Most of our creations are unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. A few of them are hand dyed, handspun, and handwoven. Consider your purchase wearable art. Enjoy its rich colors and textures.

We always have one thing or another in production, so visit us often to see what has come off the looms!
