A Porcelain Addict with Little Hope for Rehab

Sarah makes pots and other vessels within her rough-around-the-edges studio in Portland, Oregon. Every piece begins on the wheel as a bottomless cylinder which she alters out of kilter, then completes with slabs and other hand-building techniques. Her current body of work accentuates the tactile experience of pottery, employing dimensional glazes while leaving much of the clay exposed, buffed smooth. Combined with lyrical surface design in a simple, high-contrast palette, her pieces delight the eye and the hand.

Sarah earned a BA in Biology from the College of Wooster, OH and recently received an MFA in Applied Craft + Design from Oregon College of Art and Craft and Pacific Northwest College of Art. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US and in Japan and has been featured in various publications including Ceramics Monthly, The Journal of Australian Ceramics, and the recently published interactive e-book American i-Pottery. Sarah, a pedestrian and transit buff, currently lives in downtown Portland and works as a Production Specialist for Mudshark Studios..

Welcome one and all! Thank you for stopping by my pot shop, where you will find exceptionally crafted hand-made ceramics. My wares are designed to be helpful and charming, and a pleasure for both the eye and the hand.

My pots generally begin on the wheel and may incorporate alterations or hand-building techniques. Although I'm quite partial to decorating with a black, white, and red pallet for graphic contrast, I'm also a fan of the occasional burst of color. All of my surface designs are executed free-hand in multiple stages to layer color, create depth, and impart dynamic energy.
