Heaven Kilters Everything: The Schräg Life
If you add an umlaut to the a in my name, you get schräg, which means slightly-off-kilter in German. I’ve folded the idea into my identity, which leads to a certain approach to life. I embrace imperfection in creativity—not mediocrity or ugliness, but a freedom to risk and fail.
My humor relies a lot on surprise resulting from sideways responses to questions or quirky shifts in perspective. I’d also like my life to express some of the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi (侘寂), in which imperfection and transience are valued in part for the stories and potential they bear witness to.
You’ll find the slanted umlaut, the most condensed form of the logo on the things I create.
I want the things I make to solve little problems in aesthetically pleasing, calming ways. Mostly though, Schräg means you’re allowed to laugh, no matter what’s going on.
Heaven kilters everything.
