About

Organic Shapes that Represent Emotions

Life as an artist began in my head, as a child, escaping Chicago’s South Side. The street I lived on ended in train tracks, littered with debris from a nearby garbage dump. Crime happened outside my front door. But I found respite at my grandfather’s house where I watched him paint mountains, streams, flowers and eccentric faces that spoke to me of something beyond my day-to-day existence.

Today I see the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at the end of my street. Flowers dot open fields at the base of soaring hills, creeks and fallen rocks. Colors change as the day progresses. It’s as if I have walked into one of my grandfather’s paintings.

Over the years, art has taken on a significance that goes beyond escapism. Like most people, I have lived through times of extreme joy and heartbreaking sadness—sometimes inexplicably at the same time. Only through art can I process and express the simultaneous range of feelings that words cannot explain. Organic shapes and textures lure me into subjects that often combine conflicting emotions. It’s the space between opposing emotions that captures my interest. Through my art, I want to create a walkway into a transcendent place where easily defined emotions don’t apply. This is the essence of my personal artistic style.

I left Chicago in 1987, and I began my professional life as a writer. In 1993, I began taking art classes and workshops from a number of Wyoming and Colorado artists. Inspiration surrounds my home in Colorado, but I also travel to faraway places—always searching for new ways to express complex emotions.
