Thank you for the gorgeous album, which we intend to use as our first baby album. We couldn't be more pleased with the result and love the colors and attention to detail. The item shipped quickly and arrived carefully wrapped. We look forward to purchasing another in the years to come!!

A Son Writes About his Mom - an interview

I remember how my Mom always used to make all of the Christmas and Valentines cards. She loved making these everyday items into small works of art, not the generic stuff at the store. I sat down with my Mom to ask her some questions about her business the other day. This is what she said:

Q. How did you get into bookbinding?
A. When you were a baby I signed up for a bookbinding class so I could get away from the house for a while. I’d grown up making and building things and I’ve always loved art so bookbinding sounded interesting. Once I took the class I was hooked. Bookbinding is the perfect marriage of design and craftsmanship for a creative perfectionist like me!

Q. How is your studio set up?
A. First, I absolutely love having my very own workspace, and I’m so lucky it has a big window with great morning light. The studio is divided into two main work areas: the clean table, where I do all the designing, packaging and shipping; and the dirty table, where I do anything that involves adhesive or a utility knife. There’s also a paper cutter station with a book press below, and storage – plenty of storage. And the place is always a mess, kind of like your room!

Q. What are the basic steps of making a book?
A. First, I cut and fold the pages so I know how thick to make the spine of the book. This is very important since all my books have enclosed spines. Then I cut all the pieces needed for the book cover: the book board, book cloth and the decorative paper. I glue it all together and it presses for about 24 hours. Then I punch matching holes in the pages and the spine and sew it all up. It sounds easy but it’s actually very time-consuming to get everything lined up just so.

Q. Why do you love creating cool albums for people?
A. I love using my hands to create something from the heart. And what’s better is that even though the books are beautiful when they leave me, they not really finished until my customers fill them with their stories!

It is quite obvious from these statements that my Mom puts her love into every one of her books. I’m no expert in hand-made albums, but it’s clear to me that these handmade albums aren’t just a collection of pages, but rather they are works of art.

A note from Kris...Thank you to my teenage son for helping me tell my story.

I love making the perfect book for you! You may choose the cover materials from the Swatches section of the shop for any made-to-order book. Once you place the order, you will receive a mock-up (and name card proof, if applicable) within 2 business days, along with a firm completion date.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Every book is wrapped in kraft paper with either a sheer organza bow (large albums) or baker's twine (small albums). Please let me know if the item is a gift being sent directly to the recipient. I am happy to include your personal message in a complimentary handmade card.

Care instructions

Your album is very sturdy, but some simple care is required to maintain it in original condition.

~ Please avoid contact with liquids, including water, and excessive sunlight.
~ You may clean dust off book cloth by gently using blue painters' tape. Warning - do not use tape to clean any paper surface!
~ Satin ribbon is ironed prior to shipping, but may need a touch-up upon arrival. Use the synthetic setting and iron slowly.
~ Smudges can be removed from pages with a gummy art eraser.

How to adhere photographs ~
There are many safe possibilities including photo tabs, photo tape and photo corners. Look for terms like "acid-free," "archival" or "photo safe." These products are readily available on Etsy or in your local craft store.
