About

My Life with Clay

Functional art has always been deeply meaningful to me, and first and foremost I am a potter. I think that our quality of life is improved by being surrounded by well-made, beautiful and compelling objects, and when that item has an active place in our everyday life, it has the quiet power to make our time more interesting. I consider it a privilege to make ceramic work that finds its way into people’s homes and daily rituals, holding food, drink, flowers, or light.

During a ten year period of travel and adventure, I had the opportunity to live and work in ceramic studios in several different countries, including a two year stint working at La Meridiana International School for the Ceramic Arts in Tuscany, Italy assisting artists from around the world. This decade of exploration exposed me to countless different ceramic cultures, working methods, and approaches to clay art that have served as an extensive education. These multi-cultural experiences are valuable tools that I have carried with me into my life as an artist.

In recent years I have worked as the Ceramics Program Director for the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa, Hawaii. During this time, I had the opportunity to work with teachers and students in a variety of different methods, and enjoyed helping to build a strong and vibrant local ceramics community. I am currently focusing on my own studio practice and loving every minute of it. My current interest is in cone 10 soda-fired porcelain and stoneware as well as cone 6 electric fired work.
