Boy meets tree. Add tools. Done.

Second Nature Woodwork began in 1997 in a small one room goat barn. Brian spent many late nights perfecting his craft and with God's guidance he began designing and building furniture to support our family of five, here on our small farm in Western North Carolina.

Soon after he began this journey into woodworking he was joined by several friends wanting to learn the craft as well, before long together they created a co-op of sorts and sold handcrafted furniture wholesale to local design shops and retail stores.

Wood was salvaged by tearing down and old barns and out buildings, giving it a "second life" and giving our customers a piece of the heritage that lives on in the furniture.

The road has had many twists, turns and knots along the way, but Brain has continued to self educate himself in the ways of quality craftsmanship and continues to build custom pieces on a commission basis.

As of late 2011 we (Brian & Lori) have chosen to combine creative efforts to produce smaller pieces to sell online, such as wooden letters and symbols made out of barn wood and other wood species. Because of time restraints
some of our material is now acquired from local tree surgeons and other trusted sources, as well as old barns.

My work is primarily constructed using vintage lumber (because of the character of the old growth grain) re-worked into custom doors and tables (and now wooden letters) that represent the pre-industrial revolution high quality craftsmanship.
