Packaging
Packaging: Seeds are packaged in plastic resealable packets to protect from humidity during shipping. Each seed packet comes with a seed specification insert easily read through the clear packaging. The resealable packaging can also easily be reused for saving seed after harvest!
Inoculant for Pigeon Peas
We recommend using the same type of inoculant that is used on cow peas which contains the Rhizobium bacteria.
We have used the brand Verdesian Guard- N which covers "many common legume garden crops, including beans, peas, lima beans, soybeans and 60 other species". Inoculants do have expiration dates and can be stored in the fridge to prolong the shelf life.
We also check for Rhizobia root nodules once plants have been established. Normally sacrificing a smaller annual legume grown in the same area like the cow pea, by pulling it out and observing the roots to observe if nodules have formed.
Basic recipe for "Sweety Drops" from Biquinho Peppers
Recipe :
*Pick ripe peppers
*Wash peppers and remove stems.
*Use a big mixing bowl to submerge peppers in 1 Part Alcohol (any clear liquor like rum or vodka), 1 Part Vinegar (I've used white or apple cider vinegar).
*Add sugar - about a half cup of sugar for every two cups of peppers.
*Add some sprigs of Rosemary
*Mix well
*Pour contents in to a large jar or several small ones and seal with a lid.
*Allow peppers to sit in the refrigerator for a week and taste test them. They get better with time.
This recipe is more of an art than a science, so have fun with it!
When can I grow/start these seeds?
To figure out the best time to start your seeds first locate the "days to maturity" located in the item description or photo with Seed specifications in our Shop.
After locating the amount of days it takes to grow from seed to maturity, research your average first frost date(in the fall) and subtract the amount of days the seeds take to grow to maturity. If you still have adequate time before that first fall frost date and provide the ideal growing conditions shared in our "how to grow" section of the item description you will likely have a chance at a successful harvest this season.
Most gardeners in cooler climates start things like peppers and pumpkins indoors 8 weeks before their last frost date.
