Winter is finally over and the seeds that fell a few months ago have started to wake up!These pendants are cast in silver directly from the mold of the pine cone itself. Each one is a little different from the next, but they are all adorable.
New casts from flowering succulents in the shop including these rosettes harvested from the capo blanco that my mom is growing for me.

About

Art mixed with a little science and history

We are a small business celebrating the genius of trees and plants. We design, carve, and cast natural shapes in gold, silver, and bronze. Our goal is to create an artistic database of as many species as we can. Each piece comes with information about the tree or plant it is meant to represent, and our website, shademetals.com, is full of information and folklore about the trees and plants we work with.

My name is Sara, and my partner is Cesar. I was living in China but on a return trip to visit family when I met him. For 5 years we kept in touch and I was amused by his millennial ways from a distance. When I returned in 2014, it was a great comfort to have someone around who spoke both Chinese and Spanish and could straddle different worlds and cultures with me as I learned to live in America again. With the help of several intensive metal-smithing classes, endless how-to youtube videos, and good old trial and error we grew our little side project into a business. Now we get to work together on nearly ever aspect of daily operations. This can mean some arguing about the right direction, but it also means there is a lot of mutual support and encouragement that goes into every piece.

We work out of a backyard studio doing all the design, casting, and finishing of the pieces ourselves. We have three ways of creating our art. Nature is our ultimate source of inspiration and a few of our pieces are found objects that we cast. Most of the pieces however, are either carved from hard wax or sculpted from softer waxes. Some designs are hand drawn and 3D printed in wax.

Once the wax is made we use the lost wax casting process to turn the pieces into metal jewelry. This means that the piece gets suspended in a flask, covered with plaster and baked in a kiln. In the kiln the plaster hardens to a hard ceramic and the wax melts away. This gives us a hole where we pour in the molten metal.

I initiate most of the designs either on paper or by carving them from of wax. Cesar pretty much does everything else. He is a chemist by trade, which makes him comfortable with the equipment and technical aspects of casting jewelry. It helps that he also likes to play with fire. AND that he is fluent in a few of the 3D softwares that we use to build small intricate pieces on the computer.

I am a certified tree steward for our city, Richmond Virginia. I learn a lot about our environment from pulling up invasive species and planting native ones, pruning the street trees, and helping to restore green spaces. I feel very fortunate to have had my life enriched by all this new knowledge of botany- and I still have so much to learn. The experience I've had training with urban naturalists has been great. Cesar helps out with city projects sometimes, but he mostly enjoys re-living his boy scout days foraging for wood on our camping trips or for backyard bonfires.

  • Cesar

    Owner

Cesar is a chemist by trade with a penchant for 3D drawing. He brings a scientific approach to the work by constantly experimenting with new techniques and equipment. But he enjoys the ancient craft of pouring metal more than all his machinery.

  • Sara

    Owner

Sara is a linguist and an artist. Her background is in oil painting but now it is her wax sculptures that get turned into jewelry. After living in China for 6 years she returned to the US in 2014 and began studying nature.

Production partners

  • Rio Grande

    NM, United States

This company is a well reputed supplier of findings and assembly parts used to make the jewelry- like jump rings and ear backings for example. We appreciate their service and their tutorial videos.

  • Shapeways

    NY, United States

This company produces 3D printed waxes for us. We design the product on our software and send it to them to print out. They return a wax copy of our model which we then cast.
