About

Married artists living their dreams.

Shady Tree Art is an inspiring evolution of the marriage of two artists: Kathy Anderson and Tony Reynolds. For Kathy her love of painting goes back to when she was a young child growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio. By the age of nine she was already exploring Liquitex acrylics, pastels and oils thanks to the encouragement of her parents. Her love of painting stayed with her through her youth and into adulthood. She dreamed of one day becoming a full time artist/ painter.

She came to Licking County by way of Denison University in the late 70’s where she took several art courses but chose instead a major in psychology. Upon graduation she married and had two daughters and became immersed in raising a family. She continued to pursue her painting in her free time until after her children graduated high school. She then decided to leave her job as a mediator at domestic relations court in Newark, Ohio in 2004 to pursue her art more seriously.

Tony’s fascination and love of woodworking also began in his youth growing up in the greater Cincinnati area. He used to spend hours watching his grandfather work in his woodshop in the basement. Tony went to work for his father at an early age laying brick. Over the years he garnered a thorough knowledge of the building trades, not only in masonry but in all aspects including framing and carpentry.

Tony also moved to Licking County in the late 70’s where he started his own masonry company but later moved into electronics and founded his own home theater installation business. He first started turning wood in 1992 and fell in love with it. He took classes whenever he could from established wood-turners. By 1995 he also began to teach himself furniture building.

In 2004 both Tony and Kathy were ready to focus more seriously on their art. Destiny brought them together at a local art association: The Licking County Arts. Within a few years they became friends, both serving on the board and encouraging each other’s artistic endeavors. Tony served as board president and moved the association to a larger facility. Kathy became marketing coordinator. With a common goal of pursuing both their own art and furthering the Licking County Arts they continued to grow as friends.

By 2009 both realized that they were destined to be more than friends. After a difficult decision to end her first marriage, Kathy moved in with Tony and they began their relationship as life partners. On August 2nd 2011 they were married on a beach in northern Michigan and shortly afterward Shady Tree Art was officially born. Shady Tree Art is the union of the talents of two artists who deeply love and inspire one another.

The name Shady Tree Art was decided upon while Tony and Kathy were sitting under the apple tree in their back yard recounting the day’s labors: Tony in his wood studio and Kathy in her painting studio. Between Kathy’s love for nature and landscape painting and Tony’s love for wood-turning and furniture building, the name seemed to be a natural for things to come.
