Announcement   Welcome to the gallery shop of Asian Arts and handicrafts and Tibetan Buddhist Thanka Fine Art Prints. All the sculptures, masks, jewelry and original paintings in this shop were purchased over 30 years ago in their countries of origin. Items are curated by David Ross Komito, Ph.D., a professor of Asian philosophy and religion. You can learn more about David at www.komito.com.

The thanka prints were painted by Kayla Komito. They originally were commissioned by Buddhists who wanted paintings created according to the strict traditional standards of line, color, and image. As is also traditional, the style is Kayla's own, as are her touches of whimsy ..... which you will see in the extremely detailed backgrounds. She has a particular fondness for quarrelsome crows, languorous deer, wily coyotes and spotted snakes. For many years she was a professional floral designer, so luscious flowers are also a distinctive feature of her paintings.

Thanka appreciations:

-- The Dalai Lama, at Kayla's last meeting with him to discuss her paintings: "You indeed have an artistic gift and talent, which is clearly evident from the beautiful thankas you have painted"

-- Gehlek Rinpoche: "There is nothing in your thankas which is not authentic."

-- Robert Thurman, upon receipt of one of his two commissions: "You have created a masterpiece. It is stunning. I salute you with all sincere gratitude."

Please enjoy some of these beautiful arts and handicrafts for yourself and if you are interested in outer luminosity as well, visit Kayla's other Etsy shops "LuminousLadyVintage" and "BeeBeautifulVintage".

Beautiful Thanka. This is a print of the gorgeous original, but it's very vibrant and lovely. Came safely rolled in a sturdy tube.

Stunning print of a stunning tangkha. The detail is wonderful, and unlike some tangkhas, the deity has real life and energy. Although it's a print, it's a very high quality giclee on nice paper and frames up beautifully. Thank you!

About

Treasures from the collection of two travelers of Asia: A wife who paints and collects and a scholarly husband who photographs.

Travel to exotic places in Asia. That has been our passion and our history. We collected most of these items in their countries of origin during our travels in the 1980s. Now it is time to pass them along to others with a passion and imagination for the exotic Asia of the past; for ShangriLa.

Enjoy these beauties from the past!

Thank you for considering a purchase of Asian arts and handicrafts from us. All the handicrafts sold here are authentic and were collected by us in their countries of production. For 30 years they have been in our personal collection, but now it is time to pass them along to others with a passion and imagination for the exotic Asia of the past -- for ShangriLa.

Kayla's thankas are limited edition archival quality fine art prints. She signs and numbers them herself. Kayla adheres to the highest standards in creating the original paintings and produces prints to the same high standards. Because each original painting is unique, the print dimensions listed are accurate in the vertical dimension but will vary slightly in the horizontal dimension. Print images on this web site are accurate renderings because they are digital files reduced from the original master images. The print you will receive is a much more detailed and color saturated version of what you see in in this shop. It is printed with archival inks on the highest quality of paper.
