Aprendí a dar forma a las piedras en 2011, cuando me mudé al lado de la Sociedad de Gemas y Minerales de San Francisco. Los miembros de este club fueron muy generosos con su conocimiento y tiempo, y me enseñaron los conceptos básicos del trabajo lapidario. Cuando dejé SF y comencé a viajar, perdí el acceso al equipo de conformación de piedra necesario para hacer el trabajo, pero siempre planeé volver a él algún día. Irónicamente, fue durante la pandemia de 2020 que me permitió acceder nuevamente a la conformación de piedra. Cuando el refugio para personas sin hogar en el que estaba trabajando se estaba quedando sin pago por riesgo para los empleados, nos dieron a todos un bono con los fondos restantes. Puse todo este dinero en obtener equipos de conformación de piedra y alquilar un espacio de estudio aquí en Portland, Oregon. Fue solo entonces que también pude sumergirme en la orfebrería, que rápidamente se ha convertido en una de mis pasiones, todavía muy estudiante del material. Estoy feliz de estar en una posición en la que puedo hacer joyas para otras personas de clase trabajadora / queer a mi alrededor, y continuar desarrollando este oficio desde el apoyo mutuo. Mi objetivo actual es ahorrar suficiente dinero para comprar una camioneta y hacer / vender joyas mientras viajo por los Estados Unidos viendo todos los hermosos lugares y construyendo redes queer. ¡alegría!
I learned how to shape stones in 2011, when I happened to move next door to the San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society. The members of this club were so generous with their knowledge and time, and taught me the basics of lapidary work. When I left SF and began traveling, I lost access to the stone shaping equipment necessary to do the work, but I always planned to come back to it one day. Ironically, it was during the pandemic of 2020 that allowed me access to stone shaping again. When the homeless shelter I was working was running out of hazard pay for the employees, they gave us all a bonus with the remaining funds. I put all of this money into getting stone shaping equipment, and renting a studio space here in Portland, Oregon. It was only then that I was able to dive into silver smithing as well, which has quickly become a passion of mine, still very much a student to the material. I am happy to be in a position where I can make jewelry for other working class /queer people around me, and to continue to develop this craft from mutual support. My current goal is to save enough money to buy a van, and make/sell jewelry as I travel around the US seeing all the beautiful places and building queer networks. injoy!
