About

Life's Travels Led to Alpaca Farm and Yarn Shop

In 2003, our family made a decision to radically change our lifestyle and sell our home. For three years we traveled the United States, visiting National Parks and learning about the history and people across the country. This conscious slowing down and refocusing allowed us to spend more time together and exploring activities we loved. For me, I found myself with time to begin crocheting again. My love of crochet started at age 8, when my grandmother taught me the basic stitches. Over the years, she taught me to crochet scarves and afghans, but I had always been too busy with other things to spend much time crocheting. As I found myself crocheting more and more during our travels, I thought it would be fun to learn to make my own yarns.

During a visit to a farm in West Virginia, I learned to spin and bought a lovely spinning wheel. Soon after, we attended a fiber festival in Virginia and I stocked up on a variety of fibers, including several sheep fleeces, llama, cotton, silk, mohair, angora, and alpaca. It was all fun to spin, but when I started working with the alpaca fiber, I started envisioning our next life stage. The whole family was in agreement, and by mid-2006 we had a herd of 17 alpacas and opened Peaceful Heart Alpacas Farm and Store on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the public. As we prepared to open our alpaca shop, my son thought the perfect name for his spinning and crocheting mom's yarn shop would be Sharla's Web.

Our farm and shop grew over the years to a herd of 60. We have recently retired and resettled our alpacas to new farms. I enjoy the pictures I receive from their new families. Here you will find a few of the yarns and patterns and shawl pins we sold in our farm store. They are beautiful, brightly colored and natural toned alpaca yarns made in Peru by The Alpaca Yarn Company and Plymouth Yarn Company. We hope you enjoy working with alpaca as much as we do.
