Smart Fashion for Chic Geeks

Shenova is a fashion brand that empowers women. It embraces the current trend of the rise of the Era of The Female, especially in the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). In an area that is typically Yang male-dominated, women bring a special Yin spirit, creativity and intuition to their work. Shenova embraces this special female power and looks to celebrate femininity, not deny it.

The prints of Shenova clothing are exclusive to the brand and designed by Holly Renee. Her inspirations come from her own life experience and are rooted in her Eastern philosophy of balancing Feminine /Yin and Masculine/ Yang. Happily growing up on the East Coast with a brilliant molecular biologist as a mother, she was shown behind the scenes of a working woman scientist from a young age.

Later after moving to the Bay Area to study her passion of fashion design at the Academy of Art University in 2003, she found herself inspired by the mixed cultures of the area which included Eastern philosophy and Chinese Medicine. Her curiosity sparked, she decided to shift gears after fashion school and enrolled in an East/West Integrative Acupuncture school at AIMC Berkeley. There she acquired a deep understanding of Taosim, Herbology, Physiology and Acupuncture. Craving more knowledge after that, she also got a Nutritionist Certification from Bauman College.

Always with a passion for art, fashion and design, Holly finally found herself armed with a message and a voice she wanted to express : she wanted to make fashion that meant something. She wanted to make fashion that expressed to others their passion for specific subjects; that would help them meet and connect others: a form of an ice-breaking communication. After educating herself and learning about deeply inspiring philosophies, she felt moved into action and started sewing her ideas in 2011. After some experimentation and some great feedback, she started to find her groove with Digital Fabric Printing technology: a highly customized, low-waste, low-minimums printing method. Shenova had its first fashion show in September of 2012 in San Francisco Fashion Week and was a great success.

Since then she has been dedicated and working hard on creating the best quality, most meaningful product possible. Always exploring new universal themes, she continues to expand the line and has met some incredible people along the way. She works out of her studio in Berkeley, an eclectic city across the bay from San Francisco, known to have the most geniuses of anywhere in the US! Needless to say, she's met some inspiring folks all over the Bay Area that fuel her creatively: technologists, coders, designers, artists, countless enthusiastic people in the heart of the Silicon Valley Startup world.

Each piece is quality handmade to order one by one by her seamstress and printed in San Francisco. By purchasing an item from Shenova, you are helping to support a local artist, local economy and the handmade slow fashion movement. Thank you so much for your support!

Holly is always looking for collaborators, and if you have input or any ideas you'd like to share, please contact her at shenovafashion [!at] or on social media.

Additional policies and FAQs

1. What is the fabric like? Does it fade in the wash or do the inks run out?

I work primarily with lycra/spandex fabric and organic cotton jerseys. The lycra spandex has a silky smooth hand feel to it and it stretches well but doesn't sag after wearing. It is a nice quality, not so thick so that it doesn't breathe, but opaque enough to be a supportive fabric for a nice wrinkle -free drape on the body. The prints on this fabric will not fade, run, or shrink, and can be washed normally in the washer.

2. Do you make plus sizes?

I get many requests for plus size designs and have now added X-LARGE as an option to most of my listings. I am open to your custom order, made to your specific measurements. Please feel free to ask!

3. Do you make men's wear?

I'm considering adding a few items. Follow me on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter (@Shenovafashion) for updates on when that will happen.

4. I work in an obscure STEM field. Can I suggest a design?

I love suggestions! That's how some of my most popular items came to be. Like the Pink Neuroscience dress. Contact me with your idea and I will add it to my inspiration bank. :)
