The things that make me want to create...

As a young girl growing up in the south, I have memories of warm summer nights when women sat on front porches sipping sweet tea while fireflies danced around the edges of their conversations. They spoke of life, love and even politics. Their conversations were filled with laughter and wisdom and even though it was that defiant era of the sixties, there was something magical in their liberation. They were confident yet vulnerable, candid yet sensual and it occurred to me—that was their power.

As I got a little older, I was able to explore different countries where I met other amazing women whose cultures were foreign to me, but their capacity for life was the same as those southern women of my youth.

By the time I was an adult, I had accumulated a library of inspiration for what would become my love of figurative sculpture—a place in my mind where I could make sense of and celebrate the beautiful dichotomies of women. I realized that whether from the Carolinas to Kuwait, women share a common story. We are a delightful tension of sensuality and vulnerabilities balanced with the sobriety and strength of our convictions, which seems as limitless as the stars.

I am therefore drawn to creating images of women whose forms, though flowing are also disproportionate and out of symmetry. They are perfectly empowered in their imperfect forms and that is what is so alluring to me; it is what makes life exhilarating and unpredictable.

I believe that art, in any form is one of the important experiences that connect us all. When I am sculpting, I live in an alternate universe, one where whatever dash of divinity we are blessed with, combines with a sometimes pleasant, sometimes not, angst—the eternal battle of the artist between self-satisfaction and creating that beautiful, harmonious “thing” that is the connection between two human beings—art.

I offer this part of me to bond to you in some small but essential way.
