Beautiful peice, my friend adores it, thank you!
My shop and it's items really grew from making what I like to wear, for myself, and then gifting similar items to friends.
I started my shop when I moved from the west coast of the US back to Melbourne. I had started making mostly crocheted hats for friends for their birthday or Christmas, I had also started making jewelry and gifting those pieces. After a little while, I started getting thinly veiled requests from friends as to what they wanted for their birthday, then when acquaintances started asking me to make them things, I began selling my work and making business cards, with Shooting Star Creations as my name and the same logo that is on my business cards today, a hand carved stamp.
Once I left the West Coast, my community of artist friends requesting my items was no longer around me and since all my work had been sold on this very personal face to face level, there was a gaping hole. I needed an outlet for the art I created. I can't remember who introduced me to Etsy, but it was just what I was looking for, I had tried out Google Pages, but since I had no idea about SEO or analytics or keywords, got no attention. On Etsy I could see that people were looking at my work, so it gave me some encouragement, plus it was a great place to buy things for myself that were hand made and sustainable, very important to me.
The utility belts came along while I was traveling with my husband up Australia's East coast, I had made one for myself from my favourite pair of pants that had finally bit the dust. I got so many compliments on it at festivals that I decided to make a line of them, Cory (husband) and I traveled hitting all the hand made markets, getting up at 4 or 5 every Saturday morning and selling our hand made items. That trip was awesome and the first time I sold items to some one other than a friend.
Now I am studying full time and teaching my own class of 3-6 year olds full time, and my collection of items slowly grows, i recently introduced cowls to my line of accessories, because I wanted one, so i made one, and then I thought it was so awesome, so useful that maybe others would like one too. That is pretty much how all my items come about, I see something I like or I get an idea, and I make one for me, then if I love it and get compliments on it, I make more and put it up on Etsy.
My shop is really just still getting going, being occupied full time with other activities I really can't put all my attention in to it, so I slowly build stock and slowly learn about how to get people to find my shop and like what they see. I look forward to having the time again to be able to get a place at a market and see my customers face to face and talk to other artists about their process and challenges.
