About

Wearable Sculpture

I have never met a medium or material I didn't like. Over the years I have amassed an extensive collection of art supplies: colored pencils, paints, pastels, printmaking materials, handmade papers, feathers, interesting fibers, beads and metal.

My studio resembles a retail bead shop - I have an enormous stash of beads and findings. I adore semiprecious gemstones, particularly blue-green turquoise, olive jade, burnt orange carnelian and colorful agates. I have an affinity for freshwater pearls - I love their organic, luminescent quality. As well as cultured sea glass, glass beads from Japan, Africa, Czechoslovakia, and India comprise a large portion of my collection. Silver, brass, and pewter add texture and interest to my designs. Sterling and fine silver wire become handmade ear wires, head pins and clasps.

I go into jewelry making much as I do any other creative endeavor. To me, an earring is a tiny, wearable sculpture. There are all the same elements involved: color, material, composition, texture, form, movement, and function.

When designing a new piece, I am first inspired by my passion for color. From the time I was a child and understood the concept of a rainbow, I have arranged my art supplies in spectral order. From my box of 64 Crayolas as a 4 year old, to my paints, pencils, and drawers full of beads today, every single one of my art supplies is meticulously arranged this way.

I love to play with subtle monochromatic colorways as well as bold contrasts like acid green with tangerine orange. Sometimes an accidental discovery happens when two beads roll next to one another on my work table. "I would never have thought of that", I muse to myself, and a new pairing is born. I also draw inspiration from the natural world - the unusual and unexpected color combinations displayed in fish, birds, flowers and mushrooms.

From the simplest earring to the most complex multi-strand necklace, each piece is a small composition. What silhouette do the beads create? How do I juxtapose contrasting shapes and textures? What happens in the space where the beads touch? How can I connect elements in such a way as to create interesting movement? Unlike a painting or a vase, which is meant to be stationary, jewelry moves with the person wearing it. How I choose to connect beads, wire, and findings affects how a necklace drapes or how a pair of earrings swings from someone's ear. Much like a mark drawn on paper, even a handmade ear wire is a 3-dimensional line. How does that line exist in space on the the wearer's ear?

Function is always a priority. Who wants to wear a clunky necklace or heavy pair of earrings? Stylish need not be synonymous with cumbersome; my designs are comfortable for every day wear. My signature handmade ear wires are a perfect example. Their gentle curve sits comfortably in the ear, their elongated shape keeps them from getting lost.

I love custom work. Making jewelry for a specific individual is very inspiring and energizing. As an artist, my studio is an outlet for my creativity, but the perpetuation of that energy and the continual development of my creative process are very much interconnected with the outside world. Custom work affords me the opportunity to collaborate and connect with my buyers on a personal level. Creating a dialogue with a customer, helping them to realize their vision, and then executing that vision as a unique piece of jewelry made especially for them is a huge part of what keeps me motivated and inspired.
