About

Katharine creates block printed paper goods and textiles inspired by botanical patterns and decorative arts.

Katharine Watson started printmaking in college, when the spot she hoped to take in a painting course didn’t fit with her class schedule. She fell in love with linocuts there, and went on to study block printing in India and then to focus on printmaking for the remainder of her art education.

After college, Katharine was walking down the street with a friend when they passed a sidewalk art fair. On a whim, she signed up to participate and started selling her work as much as she could: online, at art fairs, trade shows and markets.

What began as a college thesis and side project has since turned into Katharine’s full time career and has led to features in Vogue and Martha Stewart Living, as well as collaborations with the Metropolitan Museum and Chronicle Books, among many others.

Katharine spends her time working in her Portland, Maine studio where she still personally prints and ships all her orders herself. When she’s not printing, she’s brainstorming new product ideas or sketching new designs or working on the day-to-day logistics of running a small business.

Katharine grew up first in London and then attended high school in Hong Kong, before moving to Ohio to attend college. She now lives in Portland, Maine with her husband, cat, and two dogs in an old house they have been slowly renovating.

When she’s not working away in her studio, Katharine is probably out eating at a new restaurant somewhere, curled up watching TV, or planning her next big trip. You can see behind the scenes on Katharine’s Instagram.

Katharine started block printing in college and later traveled to India to study the technique. Her designs are based on traditional textiles and folk arts, and are all hand-carved from linoleum.

These tea towels are printed with the help of a screen printer that can handle larger quantities than we can!

  • Sufiyan Khatri

Sufiyan and his family have been block printing for generations. I met them on a trip to India in 2011 and was amazed by the quality of their work as well as their commitment to traditional techniques and natural dyes.
