Ik ga in heel Japan op zoek naar voorwerpen uit het Showa-tijdperk (1926-1989) – de kokeshi, volkskunst en alledaagse objecten die de warmte, kleuren en het ingetogen vakmanschap uitstralen van een Japan dat langzaam aan het verdwijnen is.
Elk item wordt met de hand uitgekozen. Ik zoek naar stukken met karakter en een authentieke leeftijd, controleer ze zorgvuldig en beschrijf hun staat zo waarheidsgetrouw mogelijk – omdat ik wil dat u precies weet wat u ontvangt. Alles wordt met zorg verpakt om veilig de hele wereld over te reizen.
Kokeshi nemen hier een speciale plaats in. Deze eenvoudige houten poppen, met de hand gedraaid en beschilderd, worden in Japan al generaties lang gekoesterd. Ze naar nieuwe huizen over de hele wereld brengen – waar ze tentoongesteld, verzameld en bewonderd kunnen worden – is de kern van mijn werk.
