About

The Adventures of a Star Chaser

In the deep of winter in 2018, a rare jolt of inspiration struck me; a moment for which every artist pines. I was cross country skiing along one of northern Michigan's treasured streams, imagining photographic compositions, as I often do. Something about the river that day, or perhaps the barn that eyed me from the other side of her bank, got my mind stirring about a starry night photograph. It took several return trips in the dead of night — and one booted filled with icy river water — before I captured the photograph just as I had dreamt. My Northern Michigan Starscape series was born.

This series is a photographic and philosophic exploration of the starry sky, set over rural Northern Michigan. The barns, farms, lakes, and rivers in my photographs have been captured in the near blackness of night, through the art of long exposure photography. This technique illuminates the stars and unveils the landscape from the faintest of light, creating what I call starscapes. These black and white photographs are intended to elicit nostalgia, and a sense of wonderment for this great land we call home.

This is an extension of my Shutter Steward photography project. I intend my photography to be about more than just capturing the beauty of a place. It is my visual plea to appreciate and protect our wild spaces, historic heritage, and vital farm land. It is from this vision that the Shutter Steward project came into being in 2014. I seek to utilize the art of photography to inspire appreciation for our land and instill a sense of stewardship.

On a clear night in Northern Michigan, a whole universe of stars, planets, and celestial phenomena adorn the sky. I’ve spent nearly two decades honing my photography practice, and I now use this artistry to reveal the night sky over rural landscapes.
