About

Viking Art & Design

Sigrun was born in Iceland on midsummer in June in 1970. At the age of 8, she moved with her family to Denmark and then to Sweden where she grew up. At 16, she moved back to Iceland and became fascinated with Viking genealogy. At 20 she published a book where she had traced her ancestry back to Odin himself.

Having grown up with adventures from Norse mythology and tales of trolls, elves and hidden people, she is extremely in tune with her heritage and the people and customs that she comes from. Sigrun showed very early signs of being a keen crafts woman and started to truly develop those skills at the age of 20 after she became a mother. Fast forwarding to the age of 32, Sigrun packed up her belongings and moved to England with her two sons.

Having come from a place which doesn’t have much daylight for extremely long periods of time during winter, she loves to work with candles and lamps. Her love and respect for nature made her choose to work as much with redundant materials as possible so in the summer time, you will find her rummaging through stalls in car boot sales and in the winter, you will find her in charity shops and antique markets.

Interestingly, her great grandfather, Ingimundur Petursson was an extremely multi-talented craftsman who amongst other things, made lamps out of items he found washed up on the shores of Iceland.

When people hear the mention of Vikings, the first thing they think of is a bunch of barbaric men who raped and pillaged and brought death and destruction wherever they went. Although, this is partly true, there is also another aspect to the Vikings that doesn’t often get a mention and that is that they were hugely poetic people who took great pride in quality craftsmanship and who above all, in the form of their mythological beliefs, had a deep understanding and bore great respect for life and the forces of nature.

Additional policies and FAQs
I work and create in a smoke free environment.

As I work mainly with recycled goods and each item is hand made to order, no two items can ever be the same. Because of that, some items may vary slightly from the original photographs. Most items are however not possible to create more than the one so what you see is the actual product you will receive. (apart from the candles)

Note that the electric plugs on all lamps are the 3-pin UK ones so if you are ordering a lamp from another country, please specify which as I can have the plug changed accordingly. If I'm not notified up front, you accept the item with the 3-pin UK plug.
