The Inspiration behind Silly Salmon Designs
Ken and I are both outdoor people--fly fishing, hiking, gardening--to name a few. Our inspiration and creativity come from our appreciation of the woods, rivers and oceans that we both enjoy. Often on a Sunday morning, we will hike through the woods here in Central Pennsylvania and take pictures of nature's beautiful canvas. God provides us with the materials and inspiration for Ken’s beautiful designs.
Ken is an accomplished wood turner. Initially, he turned Christmas ornaments, vases and candlestick holders, and then at a craft show, a young fiber artist came up to him and asked if he made drop spindles. At the time we didn't know what a drop spindle was. He researched drop spindles, spent hours watching others spin and then designed his first drop spindle. Being a mathematician with an understanding of physics, it wasn't long until he had perfected a beautiful, perfectly balanced drop spindle.
I never get tired of seeing the new spindles he designs, and I never get tired of hearing someone say--it's even more beautiful than the picture. That makes both of us very happy!
It’s impossible to improve upon the natural beauty of God’s work but it is a challenge to enhance the beauty of the wood that we choose. Much of the wood used in Ken’s work is from all parts of the world and it is selected because of the beautiful grain that it exhibits or because of the unique color of the wood. Even though we use these exotic woods, we only purchase them from suppliers who practice sustainable wood production and who abide by the Lacey Act.
Other wood is selected because of its uniqueness—perhaps because it has been attacked by a fungus or an insect that leaves behind another kind of beauty. These woods are often burls from Australia, Southeast Asia or domestic woods like Ambrosia Maple or Bird's Eye Maple.
Finally, we choose to use rescued wood—rescued from a firewood pile, from a friend’s stash—too small for large projects but perfect for a spindle or small bowl, or rescued from a tree that needs removing but can live on in many beautiful drop spindles. And because I like to paint, Ken creates drop spindles from rescued wood for me to finish.
All of the spindles in our shop are made by Ken and the hand painted ones are finished by me.
We also have a second shop, Silly Salmon Crochet. In that shop you will find Ken's beautiful hand turned shawl or scarf pins and rings. These are turned from small pieces of wood--too small to be spindles but perfect to live on as a lovely shawl or scarf pin to adorn your unique creation. You will also find Scarves, Shawls and Baby Afghans hand crocheted by me. I have always loved to crochet and enjoy "painting with yarn".
